Hello,

Thanks for checking out this thread. I hope there are some here that can shed a bit of light on this topic, any and every comment is appreciated, even an educated guess.

I Have a friend who's grandfather served in WW2 and it would be nice to get some info. My friend never got the opportunity to get to know his grandfather before his passing and was always curious about his military history. I don't have much information but I'll share what I know. I will update this if and when new info is available to me.

-His grandfather's name is Howard Sykes
-His grandfather was from the Hamilton Ontario area and most likely joined up/served with the local regiment.
-I do not know his grandfather's rank/title or proper trade designation (most likely an enlisted man) and as far as I know was a mechanic and worked on tanks.
-His grandfather participated in the Normandy campaign (not much more specific but it seems he was there on D-Day).
-His grandfather was a regular at his local legion in Hamilton but I do not know which hall specifically.

Again, any info on his grandfather's medals would be greatly appreciated, as my friend is very proud of his grandfather and it would be outstanding to know more.

Thank you all.

In order... from viewing left to right...

1939–1945 Star
France and Germany Star
Defence Medal
Canadian Volunteer Service with campaign bar (Can't tell which)
1939-1945 War Medal

Bottom next to Legion is familiar but still looking.

That's it... commercial medal, not issued by any State. Like a Legion Medal.

"Commissioned by the Normandy Veterans Association the commemorative medal is a tribute to those who took part in the famous Normandy Campaign of World War II and is available exclusively to veterans of the Normandy Campaign between 6th June and 20th August 1944, or their next of kin to be worn with pride not alongside gallantry decorations, but separately and distinctively."

Anyone essentially can buy that one for £45.00.

The others are official.

The tie is the other part of the puzzle - can anyone identify it? It's not 1H (armour and Normandy connection), or the RHLI (Hamilton connection).

It's likely the overseas clasp.
