So I just got a new 5R.. I had already picked up the scope, and picatinny rail previously. It's a good ol standard short action remington 700 so i thought i couldn't screw up buying the rail ahead of time... Turns out the screws for the rail are much larger than the receiver was drilled 'n tapped for.

Needless to say I'm kinda choked about that part, but what I really wanna know is whether the holes in the picatinny rail being the larger size, will negatively impact my scopes ability to hold a zero (and ultimately my accuracy) if i were to just get smaller screws? Any thoughts?

You may have bought a base with 8-40 thread instead of 6-48..not positive though..I would just get another base and sell or bring back the one you have..

I bought a 5r and a warne tactical base. The screws and base fit perfectly.maybe you ordered or received the wrong base?

My 5R has an EGW 20 moa base on it. The screws fit tight into the base , maybee you ordered the wrong part ? I know several fellows that own 5R's and non have had any issues with the screws / base not fitting properly , i would return it and get a proper mount its a real important to have a proper mounting system for your scope , I bought my rail through Allen gunworks , he has a link to his site on the home page of CGN.

hehehe, yeah I'm pretty POSITIVE i bought the wrong base, just didn't know any better at the time. I got it from a table @ the calgary gun show, so not really an option to return it... I'm just gonna bring it in, get a professional opinion. I wouldn't mind a 'complete tune-up' anyways so...

There is a school of thought that holds that the 6-48 screws which are standard in most bolt action receivers are not strong enough for the continuous stress of competition shooting (or similar) and/or magnum loads. The general "improvement" is to retap the holes for 8-40 screws, which is probably what the base you bought is set up for. Either retap your receiver, or get another base. - dan

The rail is just drilled right? Not tapped as well? Not a big deal to get your receiver retapped to the larger screw size and not a bad idea either.
