HELP!! I need info on a Czech mauser

Mystery Mauser

It's a scrubbed Yugo M48 or variation. The Syrian Mausers have a receiver marking that is too deep to scrub. I have an example in my collection and it would take too much milling to remove it.

You are correct sir, at least in my experience. Heavier bullet is also slower (leaves the barrel later then lighter bullet), which allows greater effects of recoil and muzzle rise on POA/POI.
You can get taller front sights, easy to replace.

Glad to know I may not be completely insane.:D

Where would one look for a taller front sight?

I just realized that I have completely hijacked this thread, which was only about identifying a Yugo Mauser. Apologies to TS, it was not intentional...

If its shooting 2 to 3 feet high at 100 yards I'd check a little further for your problem before changing the front sight. To bring the POI down 2 feet you would need to raise the front sight about .080" which is a lot! (nearly 3/32").

The military sight picture usually seems to put the POI about 8" above sight line at 100 m with most of my Mauser type rifles.

Possible causes:
- How steady is your shooting rest and technique? The muzzle should not be jumping much before the bullet leaves the muzzle if the rifle is stable and well supported and you're not flinching or something.
- Could the stock be warped, putting upward pressure on the barrel?
- The barrel could be bent.
