Ive come by a rifle and would appreciate help with Iding and whatever history I can get. Its a near copy of a Winchester 1873 except no side plates. The barrel is marded Whitney Arms Co. and .44 cal. Top tang is marked Pat'd 7.7-73. AP'_1.121 May 3. & Aug 12.-79
Bottom tang is marked R395. Barrel is round 24". Curved butt plate with comp. for cleaning supplies. Very nice wood. If I had my camera back from my buddy Id put up pics.

Its supposed to have been in service with the NWMP or the RCMP. A distant relative is supposed to have fought at the Reil Rebellion with it. Id surelike to get as much history as I can on it.

I would expect to find some sort of marks or cartouche on it, if it were used by a government agency. Possibly NWMP or similar burned into the stock or a broad arrow or broad arrow in a C on the metal

cheers mooncoon

"Small Arms and Accoutrements of the Mounted Police" lists dozens of arms used by the Mounties but not the Kennedy.

Yep,the gun sounds whitney, the fight sounds 76 win. But then again I'd go by the markings, stories can loose their way in time. Hows the bore and metal?
