I got a Lee Enfield No4 MKI. The only marking I see are those on the pictures. There is no marking on the receiver. Please help me identify the manufacture...

Wow... that's an odd one. I've never seen wrist markings like that... hmm. Looks like multiple service marks. My first guess would be Australian. The next guess would be a contract or a commercial rifle from an English manufacturer, the former more likely as it WAS war time.

Maltby ones are often poorly marked (like a thousand chimps with punches and hammers were turned lose). The combination M and Y is about the only thing we can see.
N74 is W. Sykes Ltd. who made the woodwork.

Re: Enfield Markings

Hi,

Try getting a copy of Ian Skennerton's book, "The Lee-Enfield Story". It contains a listing of the most common WW2 Manufacturer's Codes.

That's where I found the some of mine on my BSA-Shirley No.4Mk1 (M47C 1941).

The book has just a chapter pertaining to that subject with good samples of what they look like. I also makes reference to another one of his books about this topic at the end of that chapter. I haven't seen nor read it yet but I hear it is highly recommended.

I hope this helps you.

One other thing, the book is out of print and you might be able to borrow a copy of it from your local library for a few days. That's what I did. The book is very informative.

Best of luck.

Keep us a breast of what you find out. Some of my marks are partials of yours (on my wood anyways).
