Help identify the problem with accuracy at different ranges

accuracy at different ranges.

i have my ruger 77/22.set up for 100 yard shooting.one thing i will say is that the rugers are fussy with the ammo it likes .as i have tried about 25 different brands in mine.i have heard this from others as well.i usually shoot 10 shot groups ..my best group is about 1.25 inch.at a 100 yards..im gonna give. some of those standard velocity ammo a try..shooting these rimfires sure tests ones patience.

I tried a ton of ammo in my 10/22T and it made the difference but I too was seeking the ultimate in rimfire accuracy - there is only one answer 17 HMR and when that shell goes off you smile :)

The 22 I will take out when gophers are not shy and use the red dot ~ under 100 yards. If only my 25 round mag would feed properly....

But if you want to be happy with accuracy on rimfire on a shot=rt distance (100 yrds) then you have to try a 17

a Spanish Civil War veteran, and lifelong shooter once told me you can learn everything about long range shooting by using a .22 - just shoot the .22 at 100 to 300 yards, and do it 'til its not a fluke when you hit.

The BR50 targets are just under .50 for the bull.
50 rounds per target, at 50 yards.
the bullet had to be all the way inside the ring to make its hundred points.

I don't think anyone scored a possible the years I was shooting it.

.22 target ammo is slow for a reason, it starts at thee speed of sound so it is already trans sonic coming out the barrel.
High velocity .22 goes trans sonic farther out, so it is affected more when going through the sound barrier.

The reason that .22 rifles may be more accurate than with one type of ammo than another is because of the headspacing, the crimp ( which is the biggest variable) , the lube compound, etc.

A very accurate target rifle will sometimes exibit drastic accuracy changes from one brand of ammo to another.
A particular lot of RWS Silouette works magic in my 54 Anschutz, while Remington target is so-so.
However, the same Remington target works quite well in my 64 Anschutz hunter class rifle.

And yes, .22 rimfires can be scary accurate at 100 and 200 yards, but I have never seen a 10/22 that was, only high end target rifles such as the Martini Intl., the 54 Anschutz, Remington M37, the Winchester 52, etc.
Here's a group that ws shot with no ammo testing, just Eley club, in the winter, with a 24X Unertl TRB scope.
I can't rememebr exactly why the two distinct groups, but I think I changed the scope setting.
I know there was no ammo change.
AJust checked my log book.
The wind was a gentle breeze from behind, and i was not waiting on it.
That's my story and i'm stickin' to it!

Seems that not all 22 barrels are the same. When pushing the Dewey cleaning rod through my Brno's barrel there is definately some friction/drag on the actual rod shaft. There is non with the same rod through my Walther, Sako, or Lilja barreled rimfires.

You definately have to play around with different brands, even particular lots. You may get a great surprise and find something cheap like Dynapoint or Blaser shoots well with your gun.
