Got a few smaller ducks I'm not entirely familiar with on Saturday in SW Ontario. Hoped some savvy hunters could help identify. Only took one picture though so this is all I've got to go on now.

They were hard earned lol

Thanks for the help

Bufflehead, 2 Mergansers, a Common Goldeneye and 3 Mallards.

All are wonderful eating. I suggest you invite the neighbors over when you cook them up.

Us old farm boys in Saskabush would call the ones on the left "$hit ducks". No matter, as long as they are being used for food!

why would you be shooting birds if you don't know what they are? Good way to inadvertently break the laws since we have limits on some species.
Bufflehead (good eating), 2 merganzers (your a better man than me if you eat them), 3 lovely mallards that will be fantastic eating.

I was just going to ask about the mergansers - are the edible? And I don't mean in the Crocodile Dundee "you can eat them but they taste like sh!t" way either.

Well I was out with a buddy and since I didn't get more than 2 of the smaller ones I figured we were good. Merganser and bufflehead we were pretty sure about. Which one is the golden eye?

Agreed. Years of shooting them in Saskabush.............myself I would only would pull triggers on these green heads. (or teals or pintails or canvasback or black duck)

mergansers=fish duck, Yuck!

others=taste like marsh mud ;)

Yup I agree, I would have to be naked and afraid for 20 days in the bush before I ate a Merganser! But shooting one will be a good way for the gent to decide for himself!

Of my Finnlander friends, only 1 has a recipe for it .... He said to skin the merganser and boil it in salt water for 1 hour, empty out the water ! ... now wrap the duck up in plastic wrap tightly and place on cedar plank... and boil the duck again in fresh salt water for 1 hour....

when you are done... take the plastic wrapped duck and throw it in the garbage can, then you can proceed to eat the cedar wood plank ! its about as good as merganser will ever get ...

pardon my bad humor, but there just isn't anything I know of to make it taste, better

Left to right I see a hen Bufflehead, two hen Hooded Mergansers, a hen Goldeneye and 3 Drake Mallards and since you are in a Ontario 1 bird over your limit if you were hunting alone as it sounds by your own admission of "I got these on Saturday"??

Post #8 He says he was out with his Buddy.

Perhaps a book purchase on Waterfowl Identification is in order also. It may save your azz one day.

yeah well me too!!! -- I need to buy one as well!! when I first glanced at the photo's I would have sworn that black bird second from left was a crow!!:redface:

(I was thinking..."what the hell -- he shot a crow! ... then I started to wonder: what the hell is a crow doing hanging around with ducks!!")
