Hey everyone, trying to help a buddy figure out what this is, we assume it's a 3 inch mortar round of some kind, just not sure what exactly and he had no luck finding it when he was trying to search it up. Anyone here any ideas or know of good sources I can go check?

-Disregard, I just realize it has a piece of metal sticking out and is probably not a mortar bomb, added to the fin configuration. I just googled the markings and came up with it being an inert practice bomb of some kind. If anyone has more info on this kind of thing it would still be appreciated however.

I believe you have a practice bomb which would be dropped from an aircraft.

x3 the ones I've seen had a brass striker assembly in the nose.

Guys, The British 8.5, 10, 11.5 and 25lb a/c bomb tails were filled with Titanium Tetracloride, sealed at manufacture. there was no peephole for live tails that was an indication of a non filled tail. If tails are found complete, then it must be assumed that they are still filled. This Chemical mix is very noxious and will cause respitory problems and possible hospilisation. Report such findings the the Local Police and RAF EOD - PLease keep safe out there!

Grizz

These little bombs have sheet steel fins, nothing filled.

The bombs with the brass nosed striker are reloaded with a smoke canister.

The bombs are racked on the plane then dropped on target. The smoke is deployed on impact, comes out of the tail end, to allow the pilot/bomber see as to where they hit.

Solid metal body, they are recovered and reloaded ready to go again.

There is a split pin to secure the striker as a safety that is removed before flight.

Yours looks to be dated 54

Some people collect them
