I have a Winchester 1894 in 32-40. I was told here on gunnutz that I can make sized brass from the 30-30 case.

Q#1: is this correct?
Q#2: is a 32-40 die set all I need to do this?
Q#3 Who's dies do I buy?

RCBS has 2 types of dies availiable. One is a 2 die set part #32501 and the second is a "cowboy" 3 die set part #32550, so which one if any? I was told that cowboy dies are for lead bullets only...yes or no?
Redding 2 die set#80225
Lee 2 die set#90758

I do not know at this time if I will be using lead or jacketed bullets. I am more inclined to buy jacketed bullets, as I have reloaded this type before in 30-06, 223, 308, and 300WSM. This will be my first attempt at actually making formed brass from a different caliber. I need all experienced input on this you guys can supply. I do have 2 very old rounds and 1 box of 32-40 Imperial factory ammo that is at least 30+ yrs old but I do not want to use it because I want it for it's origional content, nor do I want to special order 32-40 brass from the USA.

You can buy loaded .32-40 ammo and brass from Epp's. If that rifle is as vintage as it looks I'd be loading cast bullets only. Loading cast bullets isn't a big deal. Any die set will load cast bullets. I'd buy the RCBS or Redding dies though.
As you know, the .32-40 is a nearly straight bodied case and is 91 thou longer than the bottle necked .30-30. It's 2 thou bigger just forward of the rim too. You'd have to fire form the .30-30 cases and hope you get close to the right length.

I looked in my reloading book and it is possible to make it from 30-30 but much harder than from 32 Special brass. the casings are very close to being identical .and possibly the dies for the 32-40 would do the job of smoothing out the shoulder of the 32 sp. casing. Although it may have to be sized after it is stretched.

You can use the dies to reform from 30/30 to .32/40 but the case length will be different, though still usable......get a 3 die set as the third die will open the case neck and bell the case so it will easily except soft cast bullets. I don't believe the 2 die sets will bell the cases. I would save yourself some work and just buy new Winchester 32/40 Brass from Buffalo Arms or Huntingtons or some such. Proper cast bullets avail. from M.T. Chambers here in Canada.

Hi Sunray. I contacted Ellwood Epps. Ammo was quoted at $75.00 per box of 20. Ow! They don't have brass in stock. At $75.00 you would think I was shooting a 460 Weatherby Magnum or similar big bore round.

No I do not. If you can give me something that's great. I'm still hoping to get started on this ammo project. But I am not jumping in on it until I am sure I can proceed from start to finish without hitting any snags. Still reading up on cast bullets. It's like wanting to reload a batch of ammo only to find out the powder bottle you thought was full is actually empty and it's 8 pm on a Saturday.
