Hi All

New to this. My daughter is in the cadet biathlon program and I'm looking for a biathlon LIKE rifle without the cost of one so we can practice. Would like if possible Target sights/5 rd clip/bolt action/fore stock sling grove/accurate. Any help would be great.

Thanks
Dave

Hi Dave,
I suggest you contact Nordic Firearms. They should be able to help you.

Dave,
The Savage MKII FVT with target sights might be a good first (low-cost) choice. The front globe sight will also take clear M18 inserts (available from Nordic Marksman). Nice to see young ladies getting into the shooting sports!

GSG builds a .22 with a straight pull Biatholon type bolt as well. CZ is a bit more money, and only conventional bolt. I love my CZs BTW.

Hi Dad

Sorry to tell you but your daughters performance in her sport may be affected by the quality tool you provide her. My best suggestion is to scout out what rifles her peers are using for training and to make an investment in a similar or same quality rifle that the other biathletes are using. This will foster similarity and congruity kn the training protocol. Essentially you want your daughter to have the best advantages to be compet6for her self esteem and peer approval.

I am having good luck with a CZ 452 with adjustable iron sights for iron sight practise....but for real biathlon use I would suggest a biathlon type rifle, it's possible that the group she is joining may also have leads on used rifles as well if cost is an issue.

Thanks for getting back to me with your incite. My daughters performance is based on the amount of time/effort and training she puts in at her cadet unit at home and on the range it's not because of one thing I understand that the best rifle would be a biathlon rifle… My daughter has shown a huge liking for biathlon so I’m trying to support her in something she is having Fun doing. I am fully aware of the cost associated and as always I realise that you get what you pay for when buying a rifle or anything. However; performance is never 100 percent the result of “top of the line” gear. Obviously it helps but I try to lean towards good training and good practice in any sport. Just to be clear We are looking to have a diverse model “LIKE” or close to “biathlon standard” because that is what we are comfortable investing into. The cadet biathlon program provides Anschutz 22 lr rifles for competition days and training days. Now for my daughter and I, we are looking for a rifle that we can go to a range and practice our marksmanship tougher, without spending 1000 to 5000$. Not everyone can drop that amount of money all at once. So we are looking for the best (ish) rifle that will suite are needs for a OK price range that I don’t have to take a loan out for.
This is my daughters first year in competitive biathlon and I am trying to encourage her.
The CZ's look popular I will look into them
Thanks
Dave

it sounds like they are just starting out. I dont belive steering them in a expensive or nothing attitude is reasonable. not knowing the budget and knowing the cadet program I would say hard training at home as well as with the cadets will be more than enough for her self esteem and peer support. all rifles are provided by the program. units do train but rarely enough range time is provided. I hope she enjoys a start to a wonderful sport. maybe if shes super into it next year a sport rifle would be in my sights. until then I pick up a cheap fun to use .22 that goes pop and hits targets. sounds like shes got some good support already. I only comment because my daughter is due for a new bow and beginner rifle. a cheap .22 . money is not really a problem but I dont want her to feel that that product makes the win. she makes the win. work with what ya got!

If she can live with a single shot, Tradex usually has used Shultz & Larsen target rifles for around $300, they are pretty decent quality and quite accurate.

Thank you that is diffidently a possibility.

What kind of rifle are they using?
- You might want to try to get something as close as the issued rifle to maximize training.

Speaking of training.
- What's her weakness?

If she's slow on her skis, it might be better to spend $ on skate-specific coaching than a new 22lr rifle.

Assuming she's fast enough, with good endurance and good technique.

Most bi-athlete lose time when they get in/out of the shooting position, and their standing scores are often lower than their prone scores.

Unless you have a skating ring/22lr range in your backyard.
I'd suggest a biathlon air rifle and a set of knockdown target.
- If possible, something she can use her harness and sling.
- Something she can practice removing the protective cover on the sight
- Something she can practice transitioning from target to target, when her hearth is thumping...
