What I am looking for is advice or suggestions on what I should be getting or asking for when I talk to the rifle builder. I plan on using the rifle almost exclusively for target shooting from a bench with a rest or off a biopd from the ground at ranges from 100-600 yards (I hope to shoot to 1000 yards someday so the rifle should capable of doing so but mostly 100-600). I have a Rem 700 short action and an AI chassis that I will be using. I also want it to be chambered in 308. I would like to use bullets from 155gr-190gr. If this was your build what would you do? Thanx Rod

is budget a concern? that will really dictate what u can do, but since u have the actioon and chassis..

true / blue print the action, kreiger 1:11 barrel (will have to find a happy medium depth for the thrat to shoot the 155-190, personally i would pick somthing like the 168-175 and throat to that) bed the action to the stock, and dump every thing you have left over into top end glass

My budget is around $2000-2500. And I already have glass (Leupold Mark 4 3.5-10)

Bullets Barrels Bedding - the "Three Bs" of rifle accuracy.

Bullets - use ammo that uses high quality match bullets. Very easy with .308, you have lots of good choices. BTW .308W is a good choice of calibre.

Barrel - use a high quality barrel. This is key - this is the part of the build that will allow you to produce a first rate rifle. If you are using a knowledgeable rifle builder he'll have recommendations for you. If he is just putting the gun together for you (fair enough) and wants you to choose a barrel, you have a wide variety of first-rate barrels to choose from. A barrel blank will cost you somewhere in the $300-$450 range. Get a twist rate anywhere from 1-11" to 1-12" and you'll be able to shoot 155s-190s+ quite well.

Bedding - your AI chassis will do a first rate job of this.

Decide what you'd like your finished rifle to weigh; this can affect how heavy a barrel you can choose. It might be a good idea to ensure that your finished rifle (action, stock, barrel, bipod, scope, mounts, etc) comes in under 8.25kg; that's the weight limit for "F/TR", you might as well build a rifle that meets that competition weight.

Spin a 30" heavy Palma contour 1:11 twist barrel onto your blue printed action.
Buy a box of 155 gr Sierra's, Berger's, A-Max, Nosler's and load them on top of 46 gr of Varget into a match preped case, lit by either a Fereral 210Match primer of a CCI bench rest primer. Your barrel will let you know what bullet it likes best, then order 1000 of them to start.
