So I've been playing with my .40 so much it's starting to hurt my wallet and I'm thinking about getting my first .22

The pistol will mainly be for plinking/practice but I'll do a couple local matches with it every year. I like the looks of the 1911 styles but don't want to sacrifice that much in performance. Not sure how bad they really are...

Are the Buck Marks and Mark III's really that good? Is there a feasible 1911 model out there, Colt or Sig perhaps?

Anyways, I'd love to hear what you guys are using and how you like them!

Cheers,
D

IMHO, you can't go wrong with a Buckmark. I'm still kicking myself for trading it away on a Chiappa 1911-22(I wanted a 1911 pattern .22 to go with the Norc .45 I bought at the same time). The Chiappa is ok, but the Buckmark was a much better pistol.

First, if you don't know already, 22 semi autos are generally all picky about ammo. So read reliability reports with that in mind. Any of the options you mention should be fine in that regard.

If you're doing matches, you might need to consider magazine availability as a major factor.

People seem to love the GSG 1911, and they seem to work really well. There's an added advantage that you can use the same holster as a "real" 1911, and consequently "real" holsters are available for it. Try finding a match-functional holster for the Ruger or the Browning...

I'd have no hesitation in buying a Buckmark based on what you've said your needs are. I really prefer the feel of the Browning frame to the Ruger.

Personally, I'm a big fan of the Norinco m93. It's a surprisingly faithful copy of the first generation Colt Woodsman, one of John Moses Browning's originals. It's fun and educational having a pistol that you aren't afraid to tear down and work on. But if you're not a tinkerer, you might be annoyed if you get one that needs work.

The Buckmark is a superb .22 handgun that is still available for great prices. To be honest, I'm surprised it's still so widely available at such good prices. True, it doesn't have the big boy gun look of the GSG 1911 or the M&P 22, but it's far more reliable and less picky on ammunition in my opinion.

The guns like the GSG and M&P do have a place, especially as training pistols if you own the centrefire versions of those guns. But if you need a purely functional .22 pistol and don't feel the need to impress anybody with it, the Buckmark is about as good as it gets.

I used to own a Smith & Wesson model 41 but in a moment of weakness I sold it. Been kicking myself ever since. But enough talk about my stupidity. :(

The 41 is big bucks so if your only going to shoot a few matches a year it may not be worth the expense. I purchased a Sig 1911-22 and I really like it. The reason I went with it was because it is great for practice as it is the same size as center fire 1911's. It's a very good shooter and I would recommend it.

I have never owned a Buckmark but I have heard many good things about them so I don't think you would be disappointed with one.

Some day I'm going to buy another 41.

Tell me it's better than the Mosquito..

Never owned a mosquito, but have never heard anything good. The salesman actually told me not to buy one when I shopped for the 1911. For pure bang for the buck, I don't think it could be beat. If the gsg's came in the nice finishes they do now when I bought mine,I would've gone that route instead of paying a little more for the sig.

black sunshine, what ammo were you using in the video.

My Buckmark Camper just loved American Eagle 40 gr.

I was using Federal champion bulk pack .but everything I have used works well.
I ment to show that in the vid but forgot to mention it wile the vid was rolling .
I found I was most accurate with CCI Blazer and really like em .
The gun likes everything ..stinger work perfectly and gives you a nice blue muzzle flash, velocitors are nice and powerfull to
should mention that I have not tried any subsonic rounds ....as I have no use for them .... but all standard, high and hyper velocity ammo worked excellent

What are you shooting for a .40? Have you considered a conversion kit? I have been thinking along those lines for my CZ85,I read really good things about them

I'm shooting an M&P right now. There was talk of someone doing a conversion for a little while then S&W came out with the M&P22. Stale ale now.

Is there any kind of comparison in accuracy between the Mark III or 22/45 and the GSG?

If you are after a nice 1911 style plinker that shoots pretty good then the GSG is my suggestion. The details of the machining with the GSG is superior in its price range.

If you want optimum accuracy then consider the Ruger, Buckmark or other dedicated purpose designed .22. There's a solid reason why the more accurate rimfire pistols all have their barrels build solidly into the frame. It simply provides top notch accuracy.
