Help Me Choose a Coyote Caliber

In the area where we hunt deer, coyotes are everywhere now. Use to be none in the area, and about 15-20 years ago they introduced them and wild turkeys. The turkeys are everywhere and eat the same stuff the deer like, and the coyotes chase/kill the deer. Last deer season we saw turkeys and yotes every day, and one single doe in the 2 weeks. Not sure how to get the deer back, but removing the yotes seems like a good start...

i have hunting ammo, but the other day i was thinkin of cyote hunting, and all i had in the van was FMJ.
just askin for next time.
(when i find my hunting ammo, i will put a few rounds in the van and leave them there.)

My concern with FMJ and coyotes is not whether or not it will kill them, but whether or not you will find them after they are shot. I would not use FMJ on coyotes, which I consider to be one of the toughest animals I hunt (pound for pound basis). Lots of coyotes shot with FJM bullets will run a long way, with the possibility of very poor blood trails. Use expanding bullets on live animals.

My favorite coyote round is the .22-250.

I am looking to purchase a new gun for coyotes. I am trying to pick a caliber. The .204 Ruger and .223 Remington appeal to me because I don't want to go too big and wreck every pelt, yet something tells me a .243 or .25-06 may be better for taking longer more accurate shots. Looking for some knowledge on the subject as I'm fairly new and inexperienced hunting coyotes. Any opinions or insight on this would be much appreciated, thanks.

Take whatever you use to hunt deer, and get at 'er. Coyotes are skinny, littler than pronghorn sized critters. Shoot about 10 or 20 of them. Decide if you need to up or down your cartridge. Then tell us Internet experts what worked for you.

I'd like to give the .25-06 and/or .257 Weatherby a go on coyotes. For a pelt saving load, I would load Speer 100 gr. spitzers to around 2300 fps. using SR4759. Guaranteed to pin-hole the critters and on a non-windy day, 300 yd. hits ain't out of the question. Think .25-35 Win. velocity with bullets designed for expansion at much higher speeds.

Reduced loads work great in all the chamberings mentioned here for coyotes. Just keep the speed to below your chosen bullets' expansion threshold on the critters you shoot. Accuracy can be excellent when the right load is worked up for your rifle, plus you save on powder and have less wear and tear on the barrel & brass.
:)

Be fun to try the 257WM and see the results.
Kripes, should be good fer a towsand yards............:runaway:

I think he needs the ever under powered 458 WinMag for yotes.
Just put the cross hairs on the shoulder and bang kerplop !

I just have to get off my butt and get out there MORE! I've got .223, .22-250, .243, and .260 to choose from. Last 2 seasons, I just been rocking the .22-250 in my Remmy M700...

I've also got a .223 and .260 barrel for this receiver, just gotta switch them up once in a while. Got the Badger M5 bottom metal and AICS magazines/ MDT Tac magazines in .308/.223 whenever I switch barrels and bolts! :)

Use what works for your area and your needs. Have fun, most of all!

Ive hunted coyotes for years, used everything from .204's up to 220 swift even a 243. My end goal is to kill a coyote with minimul pelt damage. Last year I used a .223 with 52 gr Sierra HP's and 50 VMAX's, both were pretty good on fur. This winter Im shooting a .204 with 35 Bergers or 39 BK's....Ive found these bullets drop coyotes with ease and do very little damage, plus hits are easy to see in a light weight rifle.
A big downside to shooting the .204 is lack of components..they are around but you need to look and buy when you find them..the 223 is very easy to find everything for....I was even picking up 1x fired Nosler brass on the range a few outing ago.

I use a 25/06 and have taken a good number over 400 yards with no visible damage with 75 gr Vmax. My last was 552 yards. Furthest was 650 yards lazered on my buddy standing over the dead dog. It ran about 10' before it collapsed
However under 100 yards the exit holes can be graphic.
There's no perfect caliber but I truly believe the 25/35 would be as close to perfect when shooting 117 interlock bullets

Here's a load to try that duplicates the 25-35 from a 24" tube. Load 32.4 gr. of Varget, held in place with a carefully packed down pinch of kapok (Dacron fiber) filler to keep the powder in place without compressing it. You'll get 2300 fps. MV with the 117 gr. Hornady, but it would be nice to see how well that load shoots from a 1 in 10" twist 25-06 barrel compared with an original 25-35 barrel twist of 1 in 8".

Let the shoosting begin.

Varget is to precious at the moment lmao. I use 49 gr varget and 75 gr Vmax and 51 grs imr4831 with 117 interlocks for 3550 fps and 3100 fps respectfully from a 22" barrel. 100 yards same poi. My ammo is interchangeable to 250 yards for coyotes.
I'm saving to have a custom single shot stalking rifle built in 25/35 or 25/20 I'm leaning towards the bigger case. Just can't decide on the action type

A Martini Henry action or Remington rolling block would be good choices along with the Ruger No.1 and Winchester hi-wall types.

I went the bolt action route with my 32-40 Win. "squirrel bomber" and done it up as a switch barrel on a Lee Enfield No.4 Mk1 action.

Kind of like asking what car to buy. Personally I use a .243 with 70 gr. Nosler Varmits. Or Hornady 65 gr V max. the gun of course is a Win. M-70. I carry it around in a 3/4 ton Dodge diesel.

I had Tikka lam.stainless in .243 and just regret i ever sold it.
Extremely accurate and well balanced rifle.
Used Barnes Varmint Grenade 62gr,
Nosler (something )match in 55gr and 107gr Sierra match king. Sound strange that different variations like this work but really good groups and pleasant coyote hunts with this rifle.
Next time in store pick one up and feel is it for you or no but great quality and accurate rifle for long years to come
