I've started shopping for a new rifle.
Here is what I've got in mind so far;

Rem 700 sps SS
Tikka T-3 SS
Savage 116###x
Ruger M77 mark II

Which would you choose and why?
Have i forgotten anyone?
As always, price is a factor.

I'd also like to drop a couple bucks in my rifle as funds will allow in the future. trigger job, ect...

I have a T-3 s/s and a 700 SPS, but I can't comment on your other two choices. I'd take the T-3 for sure, it is a very smooth, accurate rifle. Plus you can save the money you intend to use on a trigger job and put it towards your scope.... T-3s have very nice, easily adjustable triggers.

if you're looking to tweak your rifle in the future with aftermarket parts, the Model 700 is a great platform. Lots of aftermarket triggers, safeties, bolt shrouds, firing pins, stocks, mounts, barrels, yada yada available for it.

that'd be my choice, but Im a bit biased, owning four of them :D

yes that is why I was leaning heavily towards the 700 (not that the savage doesn't have it's fair share of aftermarket goodies).... I'm the rather do it myself type of guy, get full satisfation that way:)

For me it would be between the Remington and Tikka. What cartridge were you thinking of getting? That may have some impact on your decision. For example Remington SPS in 7 Rem Mag or 300 Win Mag come in 26" barrel but the Tikkas come in 24.

Steady

Is this a big game hunting rig?

The last Savage I had was ugly and had a blind mag, but shot really well.

The newer ones have a slightly nicer stock, Accutrigger, and floorplate or DM options, and still shoot really well. And the price is very competitive.

They don't have the glass smooth action of the Tikka, but I'm leaning back towards Savage for my next new rifle.

still debating ...
undecided

I've had remington's that were great and some that were terrible, quality control lately has been really questionable. The Tikka's are really accurate and simple, but they don't sit any emotion in me at all and the stocks don't fit me. I can't get my head around a savage, just to ugly even though buddies own them and these two are tackdrivers. the ruger although I've never owned one seem real solid to me, CRF some think it's better, rings included, non adjustable trigger. I would be tempted to buy the ruger for $699 including rings and a timney trigger for $140. works out to about the same price as the others.

Been there, done that. I just bought a new rifle and these were the same 4 models I evaluated. The Remington has price going for it, but I really didn't like the feel of the action. The story I got on the Ruger was that sometimes you get a shooter, and sometimes you don't. That left it between the Savage and the Tikka. The Savage has the Accutrigger and a reputation as being accurate out of the box, but in the end I chose the Tika because I liked the look and feel of everything (good trigger, out of the box accuracy) and because I really never heard anything negative about it other than the expensive magazine. I bought mine in 30.06.:D

Of those four,I would lean very heavily in favour of the T-3.All the T-3's I've seen(more and more are showing up at the range)shoot nice and have very smooth actions and they feed from an inline mag for reliability.Next, because of it's CRF I'd go for the Ruger.A hunting buddy has a Savage, but I don't know much about them so can't comment.Remington:rolleyes: get to know your smith.
Here is another two to consider:
Winchester mod 70 Or Browning A-Bolt

I have a Rem 700 SPS DM 30-06 and I like it BUT: I would go for the T3. I was thinking that I was making a good deal by saving some 100$ with a REM 700 but I think that the Tikka is a better rifle: Action is way smoother on the T3, 1 pound +or- less to carry around, better magazine (even if its plastic), the Tikka scope rings, easy trigger ajustments and so on.
If you really whant a Rem for parts and modifications I could sell you my Rem. For a hunting rifle, how much mods to you need anyways.

Hope this help.

I went out and got to shoulder them all.... (again)
I thought it would help, it actually didn't.
My choice has been Narrowed down to the T-3 lite and 700 SPS. Arghhhhhhh decisions, decisions:confused:

Now I don't even know if I want SS or blued Action.... I feel like a child in a candy store who can only pick one item, worried about choosing the right one.
I'm going to have to think this one over for a while, I suppose.

I am leaning towards, what some of you might consider to be a boring calibre....30-06, tried tested and true. Can't go wrong there.

I would definitely go with the stainless. I don't know about the conditions out your way but moose hunting in northern BC with its typical fall weather was hard on my conventional wood stock and blued rifle. After a few years of this sort of hunting on ATV's, horse, back-packing etc., my rifle looked beaten and I do look after my guns but steady exposure to hard weather and field conditions takes its toll. Went to stainless and no regrets since. SS with composite stock will wear better overall and not react to conditions as wood may.

My inclination is for the Tikka - it has a out of the box accuracy guarantee. My Tikka is a tack driver.

Oh to have such dilemmas! Life is hard.

Good choice, you'll be happy...
What scope you putting on it?

For the meantime I have a Bausch and Lomb elite 3000 1.5-4.5x32mm. It's an adequate scope for hunting in Quebec. Most of our hunting is done in the bush and kill shots are rarely over 100 yards. It has a large FOV and you do not have to worry about eye relief. But at the range the scope lacks a little bit of magnification for the 200Yard and over shots... this is why I am thinking of getting a bushnell 3200 3-9x40mm. Now if I could only decide if I want to go matt black or silver....

Although at first glance I would be inclined To try to match the scope to the color of the action/barrel, and I have always been under the assumption that a silver scope would be the appropriate choice for a SS barrel/action. With a hunting rig in mind, I need to think things through.....First of all, most silver scope are rarely a perfect color match with the SS . Could a silver scope creat a glare or reflections from the sun in a hunting situation? With the matt black you wouldn't have to be concerned with the scope creating glare. And a matt black scope could be switched from a SS or blued rifle without concern.

What are your thoughts guy's?

*** This deserves a thread of it's own***
