Help me choose a POLY 45acp

I am addicted to tinkering so that's not a problem.

I picked up a gen4 G21. My favourite .45acp pistol. Easy to shoot, clean and a tough finish. Comes with 3 mags and more are priced reasonably and are available.
It should meet your needs except it does not need any" tinkering" to make it work for its intended purpose. YMMV

Check out Springfield XDm.45. I own it and love it. Good fit and finish, not all that heavy yet helps to absorb the recoil, comes with 13rn. mags pinned to 10. It accepts lead projectiles, easy to strip & clean. I'm certainly keeping mine and if anything, I really would like the same gun in 2 tone.

I am leaning toward the glock and try to ignore the looks! I would get a lone wolf 3.5 connector and a NY1 trigger spring even though I prob don't need to but I can't help it...

I hated the "looks" of Glocks for many years. I finally picked up a G17 gen3 just to see what all the hype was about. After a while its "looks" grew on me. I really like the simple design without any fancy curves/lines etc. Both my Glocks(G17 and G21) are my "best" looking HG's IMO. No non-sense all business ready to rock Glocks!
fyi....my stock G21 gen4 has a crisper trigger than my G17 with a Glock OEM 3.5(-) connector and NY1 spring. YMMV

Asking for advise is good but bottom line is you have to hold each one and see which gun fits your hand the best and buy that one. I own both M&P's and Glock's and for me the M&P grip fits like a glove where the Glock is really blocky. M&P palmswells are superior compared to the Glock backstraps. M&P, Glock, Sig, Springfield etc, they are all reliable. I would also look at magazines and spare parts availability. IMO

I have little experience with poly pistols (besides H&K) other than trying Glocks and M&P's, but the M&P's fit and felt better to me. Have to try them, that's all. Make some friends at your range and swap guns.

I agree with jackrabbit000...you got to try them out for yourself. Personally, I do not like palmswells.YMMV.
Like carmovies I also shot my Glocks better than my other handguns that "fit" me better.

I'm jumping in here a bit late...not sure if the OP bought anything yet. Anyway I've been digging my HK45 for the last little while. Didn't like the trigger that much from the start but I'm slowly getting used to it. Pretty soft shooting for a 45, seems to be accurate enough, and points and feels similar to a 1911....plus I love the HK mag release! Also the HK sights are really nice....bright during the day and glow pretty bright at night too. The Glock 21 is a heck of a pistol as well but, lets face it, a little on the boring side. A FNP 45 would be a good alternative to the Glock, price wise anyway.

Getting back to the HK45. It's a typical DA/SA but with a twist, and since you made mention that you like 1911's you might find this interesting. You can decock and holster in DA. You can decock and use the manual safety....or (and this is the best part) holster in SA with hammer back and use the manual safety just like with your 1911's. As a 1911 fan myself, the HK45 is the closest polymer framed 45 to the 1911 that I've tried. Cons: Price of the pistol, price of the mags, and the trigger needs a shorter reset.

I have a few .45's and they all shoot nice. My favourite being the 1911! ...but on the ploy side, my Beretta PX4 in OD green is a nice comfy .45. I have the HK USP, but don't like the way it fits in my hands. But they are all as equally accurate. I'm surprised that the Beretta PX 4 SD .45 didn't get more praise, it's a really nice gun. My thoughts anyway.

And then we have the next generation Grand Power........

I'm partial to the M&P .45 with all the tinkering you mentioned of course. Polishing internals, Trigger, Sear, improved solid reset and anything else to make it smooth.

I know the below doesn't match your criteria. However seeing that you love the 1911 already and If I had $5000 to spend :) I'd take one of these!

Glock 21SF (short frame) for medium to small hands.

Agree with the Glock 21sf. It may not be the prettiest gun, but it just works. With good ammo, this gun just fires, each and every time. It is also quite accurate, and easy to shoot. Parts are plentiful and cheap. Recoil is very manageable.

I recently purchased a SR 1911 and love it. In fact, I have ignored my G21sf for quite a while. This week I took her out to my indoor range and boy did I do well with it. I mean it shot better than the 92A1 I was using to test loads. I could not get over how accurate I was with this pistol. Bone stock, no trigger job, nada. My vote is for the G21 obviously.

Hackathorn and Vickers have said the the HK45 and the M&P45 are where it's at for modern 45 autos. I've owned an M&P45 and it's pretty hard to argue with them on that -costs just more than half what an HK costs, shoots very gently compared to my Compact 1911, has great accuracy (really great accuracy) and is as reliable as you'll find. The HK is probably a better gun, but I'm willing to bet that getting parts or factory service for it is 10x harder than it is for the Smith - especially here. As far as grip size goes, you'd be hard pressed to know if you're holding an M&P9 or an M&P45 without looking - grips are very similar in size, sights are identical and Apex can give you a reliable 3 pound trigger via mail order. What's not to love? - Oh yes, and if you're married to the thumb safety, you can have that too.
