Looking to purchase a moose gun. Interested in 300wm or 338. Models are

- Winchester 70
- Tikka M3
- Browning Gold Medallion

The gun will be the wood stocked ( horny for wood ) and I'll put a nice scope on at a later date when I decide which model/make.

What have you used and your likes/dislikes between the 3 ? Either the 300 or 338 if good for me, so calibre is not really an issue here... both are good.

Suggestions?????

Not fond of the Tikka with wood. The checkering is a bit too modern for my tastes and the plastic bits kinda take away from the "wood and steel" feel. Not to sday I don't like it in "Lite" guise with plastic stock, I do, the wood just leaves something to be desired.

I'd take the Model 70 in a Supergrade.

The Browning is nice too but I'm not a fan of the glossy finishes on the higher end models. I sold a Medallion 7mm Rem Mag that was an amazing shooter just because after 5 years I'd had enough of the glossy wood.

I would go with the 70 out of the 3 of them. The Tikka's bolt isn't to my liking and I'm not a Browning guy. I did consider the new 70's before I settled on a TC Icon in ultrawood.

Having no personal experience with any of the three, through my own research and internet review, i am inclined to purchase the Winchester 70 if I were in your boots

I like M70s,even though they make it hard sometimes. I just took a supergrade back because it didn't shoot worth a crap, and came home with a Sako.Your luck may be better, it couldn't hardly be worse.

T3s I'm less than enthusiatic about, but all 3 I had shot very well, and functioned perfectly. Plastic pieces and wood finish that came off the first time it rained soured me on the wooden version.

You won't go to far wrong with any of them.

If you don't mind the 90 degree bolt throw and hinged floor plate, then the Model 70 would top of the list.

The Tikka and Browning will be a tough lighter and both have detachable mags with 70 and 60 degree bolt throws respectively. The Tikka would definately need a limbsaver recoil pad installed in your caliber choices.

The Browning tang safety is the handiest for me personally.

If you are able go to a store and try shouldering them and see how they fit you. If they aren't comfortable you may as well cross them off the list.

Another vote for the Model 70. As to caliber, I'd say go with the 300. The 338 is too much of a good thing for most guys and not as versatile as the 300. Unless you only hunt moose, elk or big bears and even then the 300 is still plenty good enough.

No one has asked what the rifle is to be used for.
If its going to have a hard life, then go for the Tikka, and hunt it hard with no worries. If it's going be something you are to be proud of, and take great care of, then get the high end M70.

Nothing worse than having a really nice rifle, and putting one hell of a ding into it getting out of your truck, and that's to be the only one.
Its another thing entirely having a really nice rifle and putting a hell of a pile of dings in it chasing a lifetime of game.
