Hi folks,

I'm in the market for a HD shotgun, and I'm stuck between the 500 and 590 persuaders. I know the 590 comes with a Heavy barrel and ghost ring sights, other than that I have a hard time noticing any differences. Are the internals of the 590 superior to the 500? Does the heavier barrel kill so much recoil that it justifies the purchase of the 590?

I can get the model 500 for 319.99 at cabela's and I'm seeing the 590 listed around $549.99.

Thanks for any input

If you intend to own more than one barrel the 500 is the better choice. A 590 could be fitted with choke tubes, but that doesn't change the length of your sighting plane. I prefer the thread on magazine cap of the 590, but there are other considerations given your end use.

I've read that some people don't like the LOP of the 590 series, I think its around 14", but if I'm looking at a shotgun with an 8 or 9 shot capacity I'd assume that the 500 model LOP would be very similar.

Some skeets and I'd be looking at getting a second barrel down the road to make it more versatile for hunting.

Have you looked at the 500 Field/Deer combo, or the new 535 ATS field/deer combo...?

From what I can gather from the new 2011 Mossberg catalogue, the 590's are being phased into a strictly "tactical" catagory (14", 18.5", & 20" barrels)...

The new 500 Turkey-Thug in black synthetic looks nice also, 24" VR barrel with fiber optic front sight...

Carrying a lot, go with the 500, shooting a lot go 590

Well said.
few things to remmber when picking eather one
The 535,590,835 are a higher grade gun then the 500.

500, cheap plastic stock, plastic safety and mag tubes you cant clean.
but it sure is a lot lighter then the 590.
590 is a bet your life on it kind of gun.
