Ok...I'm figuring by next month I'll be in a poision to get a new pistiol. I've usally only stuck with .22's but after getting a 1911 .45 I've been hooked and I'd like to get something "inbetween". Price isn't much of a factor, but I like basics that I can build and mod myself. Try to keep it under $1200 before taxes :D

I'm open to anything as long as it's not a revolver. I like 'em small so I'm thinking of something like a glock 26 with the ported (extended) barrel as I'm not grandfathered. Though, a Hi power or a CZ would be nice too.

Idealy I'd like a PPK in .380 or some similar small auto with an extended bbl so it's restricted only, but since they are rare, I'll look at anything.

Any suggestions that include PICS are welcome as I'm new to pistols and am more fermilier with rifles :D
 
Gotta go with the sigs. If you had a little more to spend this would be my ultimate pic.

I'd try a CZ75. My local gun range has one i borrowed, another one i loved was a Para-Ordinance 9mm, not sure of the model, but it was a 1911 style.
I have a Walther P99 that i absolutely love, and will never sell. It is very compact, comfortable, and accurate. It also has a 106mm barrel, making it one of the smallest pistols you can own without a 12(6)

Hmm, if you want it small, I'd suggest a used HK P7. Very compact despite having a full-size barrel and long sight radius. It is also very accurate (it has a fixed barrel) and engineered like no other gun out there.
 
P7, if you can afford it man, I wish I could stop buying stuff long enough to save up for one. High Powers are awsome, and the CZ is like a less pricey (NOT cheaper, they are high quality) version. I really like my XD, but glocks feel like a cross between a brick and a 2X4 in my hands.....Heck, you like the 1911, buy one in 9! With the heavier barrel (to fill up all the room the .45 takes up) the are dead stable in rapid fire, and you already know you like them.
 
I'm not opposed to used/surplus either. And the cheaper I go the more I can buy:D What about the 9mm Tokarevs or things like that?

Right now I'm leaning on either a Sig 226 or Walther P99 (if I can't find an extended small auto) but how excatly does the P99 operate? I know some versions operate DAO, but what this new fancy way the others work? I really DON'T want a DAO pistol. SA or DA is great, but I really don't like the thought of HAVING to pull the trigger completly through.

BTW, tring a pistol is not an option. I'm in "Nowere's ville". Actually, I'm the only guy I know of that has a centerfire pistol except this old guy I met in the next town who has a 12(6) Baby Browing.

It's well worth going to a shop somewhere and at least handling some handguns. With some handguns, when you grab one and point it at a target, you will always have it aimed too high or too low. However, if you find a handgun, which, when you grab and point, has the sights lined up exactly the way you want them, BUY IT! Also look at how easily you can work the slide release, magazine catch and safety/decocker. You should be able to do it all with one hand.
Take a look at the SIG P226: all the controls are close together and easily accessible by the thumb. Spending time to find a handgun that fits you well is better than having one that is awkward and annoying to use.
 
The P99 i have is DA/SA.
It is also ambidextrous, the mag release can be reached from both sides.
It can be a bit tricky to get used to, but once you have, it's no prob. I like the way it fits my hand, like it was built for it, it has changeable backstaps for different sized hands.
 
Screw the P99.

Have you tried a USP? I would either get a USP or a Sig 226. Both have advantages and disadvantages. OF theres always a GLock 17. BTW how bout a nice tasty full on stainless pimp daddy 226? Very nice...
 
P99 is just about the most comfortbale auto out there, and fits the most hands I find. I don't own one, but admire its ergonomics.

USP's are nice and I can speak from experience with them as I have one currently but have had half a dozen overall, but the problem is the bore is too high, and they flip more than most under recoil for many people. Still a great gun, but not ideal, and the mag release isn't for everyone (though I like it).

SIG's, you can't go wrong. Same with CZ's and HP's, or Glock. What about an NP29? GREAT gun, great price.
