Well as the title indicates I'm looking for a little bit of direction on stock replacement

Here are a couple things that I'm looking for from the stock

I want to handgrip to be more comfortable perhaps elongated and pistol style I'd prefer that the bedding to be better than the stock bedding and not cause tension between stock and barrel which is supposed to be free floating ...

I would like a raised cheekpiece for more consistent head placement/removal of any parallax errors that might occur especially when dial in to 20+ zoom

Currently I have found one contender that I think fits the bill for all of these items and still falls under $400

It's made by magpul and I'd have to lookup the exact model but quite simply put its one of their cheaper stocks that will fit a rem 700 short action

Secondarily I want to stock to look good I know that that doesn't really play a factor into its capability but it is a secondary factor after functionality and practicality aesthetics will play a factor in my purchase hence why am leaning towards the Magpul version as I believe this retains a very pleasing luck plus some good functional points

So let's hear what stocks you think I should get and keep in mind we're gonna try to keep this under $400 can... The rifle cost me $699 on sale brand new so my justification to spend more then 1/2 on a new stock is ... Well... Uncertain at best

Thx

Cripes...
OP. You are on the right track. But. You are talking MAGPUL hunter?
Couple things.. 70% (being nice) of people on this forum know way more than you (or me) about firearms. Dont be cryptic, just tell it like it is.
You may want to look into chassis systems (pricey but do come up on the EE) or HS precision, McMillan, B&C, Boyds (like the gentleman gave you without writing what he was thinking)... it goes on and on.
The Rem 700s have SO many options, its endless.
I m not (trying) to be a Richard, just read some threads bro.
Take a look on the EE.
Religiously, top end stocks come on there for "$350 + shipping" that are worth double that. It pays to shop.
Good luck in your search. The MAGPUL hunter is decent. Ive handled a couple and they will come up on the EE for cheaper.

DISCLAIMER - Whiskey helped answer your question.

There are about a million different stocks available for the Rem 700 SA. I'm not really going to address your requirements for the pistol grip as that's highly subjective. See if you can handle a few and figure out which one you find fits you best. As for the bedding, while, seeing as how you bought a new Rem 700 for about $700, it hasn't been bedded. I'm assuming it comes with the flexy "tupperware" plastic factory stock that all SPS models come with. Whatever new stock you get, if you want your rifle to be as accurate and repeatable as possible, will have to be glass bed. Google "glass bedding a remington 700" for some ideas on what this process involves. Some stocks, such as the Magpul Hunter stock you mention, as well as HS precision stocks and some others (McMillan and Manners have mini-chassis but are way out of your price range) have aluminium bedding blocks, similar to a chassis and theoretically don't need to be glass bed. That being said, most will at least bed the recoil lug. I'd say that your options for good, budget new stocks would be the Magpul Hunter, Boyd's Pro Varmint, Choate Tactical. The Magpul comes with spacers to adjust your cheek height, the Boyd's and Choate both have raised combs and you can get the Boyd's with an adjustable cheek piece as an option. You could also put a stock pack/lace-on riser or screw on an adjustable cheek piece (there are a couple manufacturers). In a used stock, you could pick up a HS Precision for a good deal. Hope that helps

I will keep my eyes on the EE for some of the suggested stocks

I've handled a few Boyd's and to be frank I wasn't overly impressed...but then again the local shops on the island have so little stock on hand...

My only hope is reading through old threads and watching YouTube review videos ( those who paid for their stock not sponsored shooters ) and hopefully find the one that will be the right "fit"

There is a gun show coming up at the end of the month... You can bet I will be handling as many 700 sa stocks as possible !

Thanks for the pointers

Lots of info... Thanks for taking the time to spell it all out for me!

A few local shops have the glass bedding compound kits for $40 a pop ... But your right the damn OG stock that comes standard with the 700 is just to flexy / weak for me to entertain modifying....

After some tinkering with the trigger to actually get it to get down to 2.5lbs , and breaking my barrel in I can't say I'm unhappy with the rifles accuracy... But I can say that Im uncomfortable while shooting for long periods of time , and ive got a suspicion it has more to do with the rifle and less my shooting position ...I've never once complained about my comfort when operating the c8 or c7 even though those carbines are basic no frills...

I am still in the R&D phase , I figured I would seek some info from those much more experienced to expedite the process.... But a big downfall to that method .... Well I ask my local gun smith if he would consider assisting with swapping the stock / ordering new one and then at least bedding the RC lug .... His answer was a question " does it shoot sub MoA " the answer is Yes... His reply was " don't bother , I ain't interested"

Not sure why I get responses like that one... Sure I can manage some .310-.400 3 shot groupings but it's
About consistency and long term comfort + customizing my rifle to suit ME...

Story short / long

Thanks for the tips !

OP, I was in a similar situation a few months ago. I had a 700 varmint action and barrel that I needed a stock for. Like you I wanted to keep things under $400 and was set on an adjustable comb. The Magpul Hunter 700 is what you are referring to and is a great option. It can be had for around $400 and they pop up occasionally on the EE for around $300. There is also the option to convert it to magazine fed down the road. The only downside of the stock is although the comb is adjustable, alternative heights have to be purchased separately and can be quite pricey.

Besides Magpul, Boyd also makes stocks with an adjustable comb that can be had for under $400. There's also a tonne of customizable options if that's what you're into. The downside with them is there is no aluminum bedding block. If you don't mind doing the work the stock can be pillar bedded and epoxy bedded. The youtube channel "The social regressive" has a great video where he does that with a savage action if you want an idea of what it would take. Also, since a stock with adjustable comb would be a special order, you'd be looking at a minimum of a month before receiving your order.

Other options come from Bell & Carlson and HS Precision. Unfortunately these are going to run you about $700 or so. What I learned from a month of watching the EE and getting info from this site is that getting anything with an adjustable comb and aluminum block for under $400 is pretty much impossible. I wanted something with an upright grip so that ruled out the Magpul stock for me. Boyd makes good stocks but I wasn't ready to wait that long for a stock. Even used, anything from B&C or HS precision with an adjustable comb was still around $5-600. I ended up settling on a B&C BDL Varmint stock. It doesn't have an adjustable comb but the comb is high and flat. By compensating with the lowest rings I could get away with, I'm very happy with the cheek weld I get with it. Ended up running me $460 all in.

In your case if you like the angle of the Magul Hunter grip I think it's your best bet. Just be ready to lay down some extra money if you have to switch the comb out for a higher or lower one.

These responses have helped me decide on firmly going with the Hunter from magpul ... Regardless of buying it used or new...

I posted a WTB on the EE , hopefully something will come up...

Ultimately I'm in no rush, I can still enjoy my rifle in its current config , I figure after a few months I'll either have enough saved to get the hunter + 10 round mag or I'll have bought one used...

I spent decent coin on my current rail and rings and would prefer to be able to keep those parts "as is" and just Drop in my current setup... So I have a feeling the stock .25 riser that comes on the hunter will be most agreeable without having to drop another $250 on mounting hardware !

Thanks for the tips all !!!

I have a Savage LRPV that comes from the Savage factory with a HS Precision stock. The stock has an aluminum bedding block that is way better than a standard bedding and pillar system, although I still bedded it with Devcon. It shoots groups at 100 meters down to 0.150", so it all seems to work. I think it is ugly as sin though.
