Help Me Decide! 7 or 10.5?

Hello, Kiddies!
Once again, I am asking for the learned opinion of the seasoned A.R./black rifle folk out there. I am going to be ordering a PWS MK1 Carbine in 5.56 from Questar. (Thank you to Mark and Scott at Questar for the rapid response to my initial inquiries) I am waffling between the 7" barrel and the 10.5". Please let me know what you guys think are points that I should consider in deciding between the two, i.e. cycling issues, reliability, etc.

7.5's are hot, but the problem with the 7.5's is that most of the barrels will be ported too large.

I have a 7.5" which has the gas port sized so that it "just" cycles .223 (the brass doesn't go far.). Custom barrel, light profile, I love it.

If you are going to buy a generic barrel though I'd recommend the 10.5"~11.5"

I just reread your post, go for the 7" PWS... hell, get it in 7.62x39 as well! You'd be crazy not to.

11.5 are best for a gas operated AR SBR......There are issues with gas operated AR's below 11.5......You maybe better off with a piston AR if you wanna go that short.......

If you do decide on a gas operated, make sure the seller includes the proper buffer, spring and gas tube.....

I believe the PWS firearms being mentioned are gas piston.

Good question Master Chan! And quite timely; I'm trying to decide on which PWS AR to get as well. ;) I have read a few good things about the PWS piston system, but would be very interested to hear how well the PWS piston uppers function with a shorter barrel and what their long term reliability is like... I'm leaning toward the 7" version myself...

To the OP, they will both cycle well with the PWS system. Get what you like the looks of best. I favor the 7'' myself for a range toy. You will be happy with either, the main thing is GET ONE!:D

50m or 200m shots no problem with the 7" same POA (maybe a 1"~2" drop).
This is impossible with a .22lr - huge difference in velocity.
 
I have the RRA 7.5" AR (gas), god awful fun and yes very noisy.

I generally use it for 50-100m, with an Eotech, no magnification.

If you plan on shooting more than 100m maybe go with the longer barrel.
 
I can hit the pigs at our silhouette range from off the bench quite regularly. This with just an Eotech. I had another guy with a 20'' open sighted AR beside me and he couldn't hit them. He must have been having a bad day, or maybe he just can't shoot, but he was amazed that I could pick them off with my 7.5'' RRA. We could also dispel the myth about short AR's not being reliable while we are at it too. Some may be picky I'll admit but I have better than 3500 rounds through mine and ZERO failures so far. Did I mention I like my Rock River Arms?:D
 
In my experience the 7.5" AR's that have had issues have all been home-built and these issues lend themselves to the home-built 10.5"s too! Inexperienced or cheap builders will most certainly run into issues then they end up dumping them for some one else to figure out.

I see few issues with OEM 7.5" SBR's (or 10.5" for that matter) ! And yes they are LOUD, they are very capable past 150m and are f*ckin' fun to shoot! Get one from a reputable manufacturer and you won't be sorry!

He probably had trouble shooting because your muzzle blast was skull fvcking him the entire time. :p
 
I shoot a 7.5" RRA (from Questar) pretty regularly.

It's loud but honestly who here wants a quiet centrefire AR?

If you're all sensitive about loudness of a gun... then I think you are in the wrong sport.

A 7.5" barrel makes a nice compact AR package. and it is advantage is clearly in how quickly you can acquire when transitioning to multiple targets.

If you're going to go short might as well go all the way, Yes?

The RRA 7.5" guns came with A2 type flash hiders and in that configuration they are quite loud and have quite a muzzle flash... but that can be half the fun ;)

The PWS 7" guns are quite different. PWS developed their CQB Muzzle Device specifically for their 7" Diablo at the request of entry teams who wanted to direct the muzzle blast and noise forward (away from other members of the entry team). The PWS 7" guns come standard with that CQB muzzle device and the perceived sound blast and muzzle blast are quite reasonable since it's directed forward and not sideways as is normally the case.
