help me decide on a long range build

Check out Gunwerks. Do it all for you. Tons of videos so even if you don't buy one, you can learn a lot about long range shooting. Custom build =5k, same as a top of the line Sako . Add the nightforce top of the line scope scope =3k. Setup and custom turret, fully tested and broken in. etc. Etc. 10k all in.
Great deal if you can get past sticker shock.
Others will scoff at the price but it's 1000 yds right of the box. Only works if you want to take some shortcuts. Ask most guys and they will end up paying that in the end after you test different loads, bullets, powders
, try different calibers etc. Gunwerks already has a fully tested loads developed that they will share with you.

So 4000$ for a gun and 6000$ to do load development? I've seen top shooters get their azzes handed to them at 1000 yards by buddy with a rebarreled savage with about 2500$ all in including glass. Buying your way in only takes you so far...

Short action because you don't NEED a long action or a magnum to make it to 1000 and beyond, a straight up 260 rem or 284 win will do that and hardly break a sweat doing it. However, while a 260 will fit in the short action with no issues, the 284 will greatly benefit if you build it in a long action. This allows you to seat the bullets longer than SAMMI specs and increases the useable case capacity because the bullet is not sitting down inside the case, you can stop it at the shoulder/neck junction. Lots of option, you need to define what you want to do and how much you are willing to spend to do it. I would recommend looking at a factory rifle to start, either a Rem 700 5R or a Tikka T3 Varmint or Sporter, these rifles will get you started and are a fantastic platform to build on. My 6.5 Swede is in a Tikka T3 Varmint and it shoots lights out and after market parts are readily available and reasonably inexpensive.

Actually it was 5K for a the gun. Pretty much on par with a top of the line product. 2500-3k for Best glass. that adds up to 8k not 4k. Every gun is tested at yardages all the way up to 1000 yds/ Then a custom turret to match.

Listen its not for everyone and I thought I clearly stated that. Regardless it was put there as an option. Gunwerks pretty much big on educating the customer with their videos etc. That part is free. Original question was about a guy looking for some info.

Ask your buddy with the re-barrelled savage how much money he put into the setup over the years trying to get those consistent shots at that range.(Example buying and selling different guns, trying different calibers until he found the right one combination) Betcha it adds up to over 10K. Besides the guy that brought it up initially could save those expenses initially and just get a great rig right from the get go.

Im all about Savages. Been one of the most accurate guns I ever owned, but try putting a custom length round into a magazine that wont fit a Berger VLD because its too long.

I've had quite a few customs built and nothing came close to 10 grand with nightforce glass. Load development? Yah it takes a bit of time but do your research before hand and have the chamber cut how you want it or order your own reamer and its probably no more than 5 trips to the range and a box of bullets.

I use a gunwerks rangefinder which is great and I'm also sure gunwerks makes a good rifle but it's definately not worth 10g.

I have a couple of 6x47 lapuas and a couple of 7mm saum. Both of these cartridges are absolute hammers.
About a week and a half back under almost ideal conditions I shot back to back to back groups all under 4.25 at 1000 yards with one of my 6x47 lapuas. If you want the details, 6x47 lapua .269 neck , Barnard action, trueflight barrel 27 inches straight tube ( 1.25), Robertson Composites GBF stock...load: brass neck turned to 2.5 thou clearance, berger 108BT 50 thou off hard engrave( about 20 thou of lands), 3-4 thou neck tension, cci small rifle mag primers and 39.3 grains of H4350....If conditions are a little bumpy the 7mm saum is the better choice imo....one of them is a very similar build....

To me, building the rifle to my specs, working up loads and learning how she shoots is all part of the learning process for each individual rifle. I like that part, I don't want someone else to do it for me, and if you did buy the Gunwerks rifle, that doesn't mean YOU can hit anything with it at 1000 yards. Not knocking them at all, they have great rifles and gear and I have watched a lot of their videos, but videos do NOT replace trigger time, I learn a lot more by getting the back of my neck scorched laying out on the ground on a nasty ant hill squeezing off rounds than I ever will watching YOUTUBE.

If I can build anything myself I will do it, half the fun for me is building, and then it is is knowing where I made the mistakes, and fixing them, the frustration with doing it wrong and learning, might sound silly but every time I have worked the bugs out on a DIY project and got things to work it has been awesome, I love the feeling that comes with figuring it out, and in the end passing along my experience to others. Building a long range rifle is something I know I can do with help I get from your guys experience.

I Run Guns, has a SSG 3000 for a decent price, would this be something to consider purchasing for a long range build? up until I saw that I thought the Rem 700 5R would be a good platform, what do all you guys think?

Also currently downloading all the Gunwerks videos pertaining to long range shooting / building, lots of hunting vids too :)

You'll learn a lot more getting things wrong continuously then you will lucking out and getting things right on the first try. If you're a shooter and practice other stuff like plinking and shooting different rifles (i.e. ARs) then precision/long range won't be a huge issue for you. I would suggest staying away from gunwerks stuff... Personally for 5k I would rather get an AI, no offense but GW seems like they cater to the rich hunter types who want to show that they have gotten an animal on every continent... But that is merely my opinion. Also short action cartridges are good for lesser recoil and spotting your impact. If you are looking to learn about long range, no one will argue if you decide to go to youtube and watch sniper 101 vids by tiborasaurus Rex I think is his name, actually even the people from Snipers Hide have said that he covers the same stuff and is giving it away for free. Actually a couple...

I have just had an interest in precision shooting sparked recently, and haven't even gotten started yet. But I can say that Tiborasaurus Rex is fun to watch - he's great at explaining things to newbs and dummies like me, he really brings you along to the point where, now that I'm 25 vids into the series, I am amazed how much I've learned - and amazed again at how more there is to learn. He's a very good teacher. What amazes me is that he provides this information for free.
