My budget is $1500 give or take.
The Brno Effect is a break action single shot chambered in 308. The barrel is 23.5 inches. It weighs 6.39 pounds unscoped. I prefer to use 180 grain ammo, and my maximum range will be 300 meters, maybe 400 on occasion. Quarry will vary from smallish predators up to black bear. It will be a stalking rifle and I want to keep the weight down to under 8 pounds scoped. Your advice would be appreciated.

good luck. i will say for the lightweight side a vx3 2.5-8x36. i do see the z6 1.7-10x42 may be another good choice but more weight and more money. good luck on the project.

The 308 Win is easily a 400+ yard hunting cartridge, but not reliably much beyond that. I would put the lightest and brightest low power variable I could find on that rifle.

Would not have to spend even close to $1500 to do that.

Leupold VX-Freedom 3-9x40 Duplex reticle. Inexpensive, solid, effective at that range, lightweight, and made in the USA.

Rig is purchased. I assume to spend as much on the scope as the rig, hence the $1500 budget for glass. I bought 30mm rings/one-base, so it needs to be a 30mm tube. Hard to find anything in stock.

Vortex Razor HD LHT and Leupold VX5-HD have 30 mm tube and about $1500CAD - both are less than a pound

or if you want to save some money for extra ammo - Leupold VX-Freedom - 3-9x40mm or 4-12x50mm both 30mm or VX-3i 4.5-14x40mm (30mm) - Tenda and Prophet river have them

or to keep it congruent and have a Czech scope for a Czech rifle - Meopta 2.5-15x44 MeoPro (this one is heavier than any scopes mentioned above though)

I found that VX-5HD also comes with MRAD\Mil (Leupold VX-5HD 3-15Ă—44 (30mm) Mil CDS-ZL2 Side Focus HTMR Riflescope 178027) - it was $1600 at Tenda, out of stock now though - something to consider if you are used to metric system.

i do think a KISS on that project is very important.

i ve got few years ago now a 7x50 with german 4 that was great for high seat hunting at night wild boar in europe. you will need a good reticle for sure.

I was just thinking about that scope yesterday wondering if it might be the goods for the way we hunt here in NS. Not sure that I could wrap my head around that big a scope, if you could even buy such a thing anymore. Not variable enough for most people.

In my opinion, it is VERY unlikely that somebody won't pick-up the Nikon scope production facilities and equipment and release "new" products under another name. My guess is that deal is already done, and the question really is, who? Nikon will live on with new packaging! Let's hope they can match the quality of glass and still focus on hunter's needs.

Hunting with a single shot rifle, you will almost always be shooting at stationary game, not running game. So low power in a variable is not required. If I had a really light, slim single shot like yours i'd choose to put on a very simple fixed 6x scope with 1" tube, and no fancy bells or whistles. Like the Leupold 6x42.
My only similar rifle is a Krieghoff Hubertus in .30R Blaser. It wears a Swarovski Z3 3-10x42. I like it a lot. It fits the slim profile and has good optical quality.

I have been looking for a Meopta in a similar configuration. It would be the ticket. For now, I have a slim little Bushnell 3500 2-7x32 that has outstanding glass. I change out scopes like underwear, as they all have pros and cons.
