Never did figure out why everyone wants a better mousetrap?? when the perfected one already exsists. To me there is not a lot of rocket science in this game until it comes to reading conditions, now thats tuffer than rocket science!!! Straight facts, useing berger bullet BC's. 6mm 105gr.Hy, .547, 6.5mm 140gr.Hy, .618, 7mm 180gr.Hy, .674, 30cal 210gr.VLD, .631, 215gr.Hy, .696, 230gr.HY, .743
Now when I study these numbers, knowing that margin of error on the wind call decreases with drift, I see that the 7mm bullet looks pretty GOOD! sure you can take advantage of a higher BC with the 30cal bullets, BUT they have to be 215gr or heavier and you need to make them fly at an equal speed. So now you need a big case and a lot of powder to even get near the 2900fps park!!! Since I started shooting at least a 1000rnds per season in competition, I have tried to minimize time in the loading room. Therefor I have settled on 2 guns, straight 260 and straight 284, no mus no fuss!! and I have noticed an increase in powder consumption when I went from 260 to 284, can't imagine filling a mag case?? JMHO
How many times do you figure you will rebarrel that monster before next season? JK...couldn't help it.
Shooters like to chase the "no drift" Genie to make up for their lack of wind reading skills. Can high BC going fast help? Absolutely. Will it keep you in the 10/5 rings if you miss a wind switch? Not a hope.
It's higher BC and speed that separates FTR from F-O and the scores reflect that. I realize once your in the ballpark with what other guys are running for gear it becomes a loading and wind doping match but a tuned WSM running a 180-190 really fast wouldn't hurt...just how long is it in tune?
I think I'm narrowing things down. It will have to be a seven, WSM is just going to be to hard on barrels, the RSAUM is starting to look good but...I'm sure I'll change my mind by tomorrow.

1600rnds on my 284, running right around 2900fps, and planing on 2 more matches with it FWIW
How long is the barrel? And is that 2900 with a 180?
cant wait to get there...and meet you by then ))
like guns & roses use to say....Welcome to the jungle !
