Help me decide on my first rimfire!

Everyone chooses different platforms for personal reasons. I'm in the camp thats not interested in add-ons….not even mags:)
I've owned a few .22lr rifles (some expensive) but my fav is a Marlin 981T scoped with a 3-9x tube fed. Has a good ammo capacity(17rnd?), will cycle any .22lr(long, shorts, "quiets", etc), micro-groove med-weight barrel for decent accuracy and a light trigger thanks to a papermate pen spring…..all for around $225.
If I was in the market for a no nonsense semi my first choice would be a Marlin 60 tube feed.

Btw…not bashing Ruger since I own a few but they're HG's.

Agreed the Marlin is good value as you said no bashing here just different qualifying needs of platforms each has pros and cons. :)

One thing I really like about the Marlin 795 is the factory 10 round mags. I've got 4 of them and when walking the trails looking for grouse I can get all 4 mags in my back pocket . Compared to the ruger mags are quite fat. Now obviously that's not a big determining factor for a lot of people , but I like it.

Thewhole9yards.. You made a great choice. 10'22's are very fun, and for what you get are very very well priced. Shoot lots and enjoy. And know that it might like some ammo and not other types of ammo, you may have to try many different types before you find what really works well.

I hope so! I picked up a carbine with the black syn stock and a box of every type of .22lr Epps had on the shelf. I've got a box of Winchester super x, Remington golden bullet, yellow jacket and viper. On my way to to range I will see what Canadian tire has in stock.

I second the opinion for a lever gun, I picked up a Browning BL-22 and really enjoy shooting it!

i shot all kinds of guns and have 10 rimfires..savage cooeys 597 and 10/22 included. So far most enjoyment i got was out of browning A bolt and as of lately BL-22. Both put bullets in same hole. I am not even that good of a shot. BL uses shorts longs and LR. Nothing wrong with a 10/22 but... they are overpriced and everyone has one. As for 597 i am no fan of the HB version. Bit awkward gun.

Don't forget that you need to put 10-20 rounds of each new ammo you try before you will see its' actual accuracy potential. I usually run a boresnake up the barrel after each type of ammo and then refoul with the ammo to be tested next.

Good thing I bought 100 of each! I've got 300 of the Winchester. My plan is to but a bunch of that through first to get a feel for the rifle, then move on to the Remington stuff.

I ran a bore snake through it tonight after stripping it down, my god it's tight. I'm honestly convinced they mis labeled the caliber it's so tough to pull through.

They are tight for the first few passes. Make sure you keep the boresnake clean. I put mine in a dirty sock, loosely knotted and run it in the laundry with the sock load, works great. Also when you use a boresnake be sure to pull it as straight as possible out the muzzle so you don't damage the crown of the barrel.

I don't think he needs to shoot THAT many to get the barrel fouled to each new ammo. Rimfire benchrest shooters only are allowed a few fouling shots before a string. And they clean regularly during the day.

Say half a dozen to maybe 10 rounds? Then shoot for accuracy?

I don't think benchrest shooters in a match are testing different ammo, they are shooting the same ammo over and over so refouling after cleaning isn't the same for them. I use 20 rnds of each new ammo to foul the barrel after cleaning when testing different brands. That still leaves 6x5 shot groups to test with from a box of 50. That way I am sure that the barrel is fouled with only the remains of that brand and to me that makes the testing more accurate as it gets rid of any chance of cross fouling.

I spent the extra and got he Savage Mark II SVT. Comes with the target aperture sights for accuracy so you can practice good marksmanship and really learn to shoot as the rifle will be more accurate than you. Also is pre-drilled for mounts so you can put a scope on it for bad eyes etc. Only thing I don't like is the forward hand position if you put a 10 rd mag on it as the mag can dig in.

The Willams globe sight inserts give you a selection of front posts to match your requirements.
It's made in Canada, is more accurate than I am, its a bolt so learning to clean is easy for the beginner.

Took the ruger to the range yesterday and put 250 rounds through it, very nice rifle. First time shooting a rimfire and took some getting used to. I'll def need to adjust the sights when I have someone to help me spot. Got some decent groups at 40 and 60 meters, however couldn't even hit paper at 100m let alone group them. I'll blame it on my lack of skill, the wind and anything else I can think of later lol.

The only issues I had were with the Remington viper ammo, would jam regularly with my butler creek mag, and maybe once every 6 shots with the factory 10rnd mag. I'm assuming the shape of the projectile is partially at fault for this as the super x and golden bullet performed flawlessly (except for one dud).

Overall I'm impressed with it, my fiancé is going to enjoy it I'm sure - she'll have a chance to shoot it in the next 2 weeks.

Again thanks for everyone's input, I put a great deal of thought into this purchase and am very happy with my decision to go with the 10/22.

Other excuses... The gravitational pull of the moon, a butterfly farted in India, a dog's bark caused you to flinch...... A few to think about.. lol
