So I am taking my M&P CORE to the states to get Magnaported, which looks like this:

I have two barrels, my stock barrel and a Storm Lake barrel, and trying to decide which one to port. What do you guys think? I kind of feel bad drilling into such a nice barrel.

with the cost of getting a new barrel, then sending your gun down to the states, then having it drilled and such.... wouldnt it just have been cheaper to buy one of the new PRO CORE's that come with the barrels already ported?

Perhaps, but they did not exist when I bout this gun. The porting costs about $200, plus a bit of gas to drive over the border. I bought the barrel before I even considered porting anyways.

someone in canada does magnaporting, like advertised by magnaport.

Also, IIRC magnaport does their ports with EDM to avoid burrs which i believe it their claim to fame. does it make a difference? I have no idea

Someone used to do it in Canada, but not any more. That is direct from Donna at Magnaport. Unfortunately, even companies with an EDM machine can't do the job if they just have a wire EDM. From my understand of the EDM process used, it basically leaves no burrs at all. I'm sure with standard drilling/milling, some burrs need to be cleaned up.

huh that sucks, was nice having someone in canada who could do it.

you would have a hell of a time cleaning burrs out of a barrel after machining. You just need to do it with a sharp carbide end mill (brand new) and if you are going to go the extra mile, fill the barrel with lead before you cut it. EDM leaves no burr so technically it is the best, but $200 to cut 4 holes? pretty out there price wise

Yeah, the price is a bit steep, but they are the only game in town and technically they are doing 8 holes (4 in the barrel, 4 in the slide). It's also not far off the cost of a screw-on compensator. I opted out of that because I like the look of a standard gun, and want to use regular holsters that I already have on hand.

True, forgot that it included the slide cuts, in that case I'd say its a fair price, about what it would cost for a conventional machinist to do it.
