Help me decide what to do with a spare FN commercial action...

FN also made a run in the mid to late 1960's... chambered in .243 and .308. They're out there, but VERY rare.

Well Kurgan; Many years ago I bought a small ring FN Supreme action, this had to be about the mid 70s? Had a Douglas ### premium barrel in 6mm Rem. installed in 1x10 twist, 24 "s long. Got 98 bottom metal and modified it to suit myself. Fitted & finished a Herter's stock in California English - one of their better grades. Still have the rifle & to those interested it is pictured here >Nitroexpress>Mauser Archives>2cd page>Mauser Pics by John303, it's the one with the maple leaf checkering.
You are right in that these actions are rather scarce and deserve a "classic" application, good choice in the 6.5. I have no idea of the worth of these actions but I do know E. Epps while in Clinton wanted $650 for a large ring supreme. Take care all --- John

My Spanish M98 Mauser bottom metal arrived today from Tradeex. As usual, another top quality product from Tradeex.
Nice deep bluing, old-school forged metal part. I will have to compare both bottom metals to determine which I go with. Traditional vs. elegant. Strong vs. delicate. Traditional rust blued vs old-school colour case hardened. The Spanish bottom metal does have a spot for 1 capture screw. Weird. I guess I'll block that off with bedding compound.

I am saving the Brno model 21 bottom metal, floorplate, and shotgun-style trigger guard for a future M98 sporter build. I opted for the nicely blued NOS Santa Barbara bottom metal with a colour case hardened floorplate. I like the colour contrast and the traditional M98 trigger guard with the pepper laminate stock. The Boyd's stock looks great and is outstanding value. However, having said that, I got dinged ~$70 shipping and ~$27 in "Customs delivery" fees... Total bill was ~$268 CDN, but still overall a very good deal.

I dropped-off all the parts with my gunsmith today. He was kind enough to "pop off" the existing 7x57 barrel and quickly attach the Pac-Nor pre-chambered/pre-threaded/finished barrel. As luck would have it, it didn't require shimming or the lathe as headspacing was perfect. As a result, I decided to keep the Pac-Nor barrel at its pre-finished factory length of 22".

The 7x57 take off-barrel is in the mail to a "prolific" CGN'er. :) No marring, perfect rust bluing and razor sharp rifling. He'll be pleased.

A featherweight Timney trigger is on order.

If I'm lucky, I'll have the rifle back to me in the new year.

Rifle parts all assembled and dear God did Oskar Kob ever do an amazing job with the bottom metal and replacement bolt. Far too good for an aftermarket stock. Any suggestions on stock makers?

wow... maybe I should conduct a poll on "who likes thumbhole stocks"? :)

at the end of the day, I am a big fan of them. I find them confortable and attractive. However, I am also a fan of traditional styles of stocks.

This rifle will surely be a love / hate thing depending on who you are.

First off, great caliber choice..... Thumbhole stocks have their place and I like them as well..... but on a short nice handling rifle they have no place IMOP.....

That case coloring is beautiful, congratulations..... I wonder if Bob Fortier could make you a stock for it?.... He does beautiful work....

I'dda gone the Pengwin............just fer chits and giggles.
Or the .358win.
The Bobbie is an interesting idea.

Always had a penchant for the .264wm.

Tumb whole...........yuck.

haha....I told you, didn't I?

Maybe Douglas will chime in with contact info for the guy that made the stock for his Sako.

Here are a few grainy small photos of the complete action. I will use a Boyd's stock for now, while I decide who, what, when, how I get a stock made. :) (yes, B.U.M., you were right).

here's a quick shot of a few of the parts before I sent them to Oskar. The receiver was previously colour case hardened by Oskar, but I had him re-lacquer it (the Oberndorf-made Brazilian M954 bolt not in photo, but suffice it to say that Oskar turned that into gold).

That is stunning..... While you can't order a Boyd's of value of more than $100, they do make some really nice walnut stocks for an upper and there are many Canadian companies that will do the import for you......
