Help Me Design A Custom Deer Rifle

Remington 700 action or 40x, Remington may custom make you what you want in 40x but if not, a christiansen arms carbon fibre barrel 20 inches in 308 calibre. (Sako TRG are changing all their 308's to 20 inches due to increased accuracy over the 26 inch barrels) Light stock of your choice, Swarovski optic 3x9 at most or even fixed 6 power fov will be plenty and optic small and light, in Talley lightweigh rings, you will have a 5.5 lb rig you can swing in a hurry and will be less than 1/2 moa gun. Today I was at the range sitting beside a fellow with a christiansen arms barrel and sako action that was shooting at 200m, all 5 holes were touching ( I was spying through my s&b spotting scope). no lie, the things was dang accurate, shooting with a z5 6-18x50 swarovski. wonderful rig, cost him 7K. I think you could do it for 4K with a remington, the reason remington actions are so nice is they are round and anyone can throw it in a lathe and work on it. plus they are plentyful and accurate.
Soo true.Personally I would never go for a scope that couldn't dial down to 1.5X
Open sighted hunters have been making shots as far as 200 yds with open sightes for yrs
so I sure don't see a need for more than 1.5X! Besides as pointed out it's rare to see & shoot a deer in Ont bush as far as 100yds.As for the gun, what ever you feel most comfortable with at handling fast!
Deer tend to disappear in about...gone! When you pull the gun if you have to look for sightes it's usually gone. 1st shot is most important, it may be the only shot.
Being a lefty will make it harder to find or build the perfect gun, but figure out what fits best 1st.
X2! ....... I've gone this exact route, but got a 270Win instead. Very pleased with it, but would go with a VXII in 2x7 or VXII 2.5x8 instead of the 3x9 Compact.

I'd second (or third) this recipe. Only thing I would do would be to get a nicer "finished" action than an SPS if I was putting that kind of money into it. Caliber could be anything reasonable and I'd think about the possibility of the odd moose.
Rembo is a wise man. That's what I was thinking. To me a whitetail only rifle is a mild shooting cartridge like 260/6.5x55/7-08/7x57/308, the gun all in with scope, mounts and a full belly shouldn't weigh anymore than 7.5 pounds. Personally I like blued steel and wood, but stainless and fibreglass works great. I've had two different 700 mountain rifles both in 260, a Kimber 84m classic in 308 and now a Tikka T3 hunter in 6.5x55.
Whitetail are easy to kill when hit reasonably well. I have shot whitetail as far out as 350 yards with these, yet you can carry them all day in the thick stuff and snap shoot when that's what is called for.
I like a 3x9x40 scope and to those who say open sights are better, as you bring up the rifle on a deer about to go you simply do it with both eyes open and only when it's time do you close your off eye...boom...dead deer

Starting with the action, either a Remington or Savage short action (left handed of course for those disabled folk). I prefer to change the safety on the Remington action, as I'm one of those wierd ones who has had problems with a Remington safety (I'm quite sure that gentry makes a left hander). find the finest gunsmith that you can, and let him choose the barrel (not hard for me, as I live in the same town as Ralph Martini). I would personally prefer a 20" BBL of some weight, as I find a rifle with some weight forward to point better. You didn't mention (I believe) if you prefer wood, or synthetic, but if like me you still hunt in crappy weather, I would get synthetic.....and of course availability of actions that it fits would dictate the stock. As for scopes and mounts I'm totally biased; I love the Leupold 2-7X compact, and the Leupold dual-dovetail mount/base setup. it's light, strong, and small enough to not be cumbersom. When I still hunt, I leave mine on 2X, then if I get the chance to turn it up on a long shot, it goes right up to 7X......which is more than enough for any sane shot, or playing at the range. As for cartridge choice, you already stated that you like the 308, so why change. There's nothing in North America that it won't drop, and it shoots flat enough for the unexpected long shot.

3. Hand rubbed oil finished turkish walnut full stock with 22 LPI hand cut checkering, skeleton buttplate and pistol grip cap
4. Chambered in .358 Win.
5. Schmidt & Bender Zenith 1.1-4 x 24 in EAW quick detach mounts
6. Open sights of your choice - but high quality - something from NECG.
If SS doesn't float your boat then CM with colour case hardened finish for the action - matte bluing on the barrel.

Well, you could always hunt the way many Europeans have been doing for a log, long time!
You can get these in many different calibres, and stock dimensions can be custom ordered.
These two guns have quick detachable ( return to zero!) scope mounts, and both are accurate with irons - they also have a set of shotgun barrels as well.
You also won't get a faster two shots than an express rifle, if that is a concern
!
The top one is in 6.5X55 with an extra set of 20 gauge barrels, the bottom is in 9.3X74R with an extra set of 12 gauge barrels.

I was speaking with Casey at Tactical Ordnance (Casey is a gunsmith and certified Remigton repair parts dealer)and he said that he is seeing more gun owners taking stock Remington actions and then designing a custom gun around the action so that they get the calibre, barrel stock etc. that suits their specific needs. (BTW Brownells has 500 short action Remginton 700 receivers for sale.)
He just finished building a deer gun for himself with a Remington T1 action. So whether the action is a Remington or a Savage or a Winchester etc. this appears to be the way more and more gun nuts are going. The alternative would be to go to the Remington Custom Shop. Which is still an option I am considering.
