so i am starting to shop for a 45. I was dreaming of a Kimber custom II 2 tone but am starting to find a LOT of bad reviews. I am now lost. The 45 is not something that i will shoot on a weekly basis. i wanted the kimber as some kind of trophy. Should i still get that?

If not maybe
Glock21
SW MP45

i fond the FNX45 to be a bit expensive

any other options? i know i went from a 1911 to more tactical options... i am lost!

Nooooo... if you want yiur first 45acp, you MUST start with a 1911

your first will always be the one you remember the most. I still regret selling my first Colt Government Model

I would suggest an Colt or Springfield for your first 1911.

Suggestions:
Colt Rail
Springfield Trp
Sig TacOps
Kimber TLE/RL2

First decision is whether you want a 1911 or a 45ACP. (1911 all the way) While you will read a ton of reviews regarding one 1911 vs another 1911, you might still get unlucky and get a "bad" one even after you've read the reviews and picked a "good" one. I've had several 1911 in the last few years and the ones that had caused me issues where always related to a magazine problem. A kimber TLE was on my list until I found a great deal on a Springfield Trophy Match. Shooting a 1911 with a good trigger cannot be compared to shooting the other .45 ACP pistols. Even my SAM 1911 is a joy to shoot. The SAM is an affordable entry 1911, Sigs are also great 1911s in addition to the Kimbers. Pick a model you like and buy it, learn how to shoot it and fix it if something goes wrong down the road.
Some of the non-1911 45s that I'd recommend are the HK 45, Walther PPQ 45 and Glock 21. There are probably several other good one but these are ones I've shot. Hey, I just noticed you're in Montreal. We can meet up at CRAFM and you can try out some 1911s I have. They also have some 45s you can rent to try out. PM me and let me know.

I've had good experiences with STI and SIG 1911s--they both have a wide range of models to look at.My non-1911 preference is something from the H&K USP line.

Bought my first pistol in August. Wasn't quite sure what I wanted, but I knew I loved the look of the 1911. One of the site sponsors had a well used Colt MkIV Series 70 for $650, and I decided to jump on it. The weight and narrow grip make it very manageable. As I mentioned in another thread I find the all steel .45 just as comfortable to shoot as any of the polymer 9's I've used. P220 could also be a good option if you decide a 1911 isn't for you. I definitely recommend all metal though. In my opinion it feels better in the hand, helps to control muzzle rise, and with a nice big heavy gun if it doesn't work you can always just hit your target with it.

Had several..cz97, hk45 etc....still got the Sti...love it..just love it...will buy another in .40 at some time soon..

I have 3 1911's. My newest is a Remington R1 government for Wild bunch (it has to be bone stock) My others are commander size/ This one shoots so good I'm thinking a long slide may be in order. I also have an HK 45 which is also one of my never sell guns. I shoot these guns better than all my other handguns.

For me a 1911 should always be a .45acp, and I do not see any added value to have a .45 caliber in another platform.

for an occasionnal .45 acp, 1911 100% ,.... SR1911, don't spend more than $1000, that's it

Anytime I read about someone who "loves their" "Will never get rid of" or in your case "still has" their "STI" I can't help but laugh.

For a first 1911, keep it cheap and simple. The .45 ACP cartridge was made for the 1911. Get a used Norinco 1911 Sport off the EE. If you don't like it, you can sell it without losing any money except for maybe shipping. I don't like 1911 Government Models because the grip safety tang could cause you hammer bite and ruin a fine day at the range. Gov't sights are too small to see. The Sport has everything you need in a 1911, i.e. beavertail, ring hammer and decent sights. All the rest like the extended slide release and ambi safety are not really necessary unless you're into the shooting games, but nice to have.

Norkies, specially newer, 2012 and later production seem to have a lot of rough edges and corners, but those are easily stoned off if you wanted to. One of my Sports is actually very well made and doesn't really need any smoothing out. The other Sport was customed by Roger Kotanko and is a joy to hold and shoot.

FWIW, my stock Norkie Sport and Commander shoot better than any stock Colt I ever had because in my opinion, Norkie barrel/link and slide/bushing were fit better. And I had Colt Governments, Gold Cups and Combat Elites.

If you have a big shooting budget, yeah sure, go for higher end 1911s. But if you're practical or budget challenged, better to spend your money on ammo or reloading components.

You may be right...but they come and go with regularity....I like to try new things...if they don't measure up to my existing keepers...out they go..and on to the next...if it's better...it stays and replaces the encumbant.....I feel very fortunate that I can manage to try as many as I can...jmho..anyhooo...guns are ###y....I glad it amuses you...lol

I have to ask (because I lol'ed hard at your post) you're aware of what STI stands for, right?

If you're heart is set on a 1911 buy either the cheap Norinco you wont lose money on or the best one you can afford as you'll just end up there anyways. If you want a .45 in a different platform my vote goes to a 5in barrel P220. If you're not a fan of 1911's or P22X series sigs then I'm at a loss.

I agree that the 1911 is the way to go - but I do not agree with the suggestions to go with Norinco. They are a sad introduction to what is the finest pistol platform available. I see Rickster66 offered you a range meet-up. Best possible opportunity.

Try what you can. You don't need a $4000 gun - but you don't want a $400 gun either.

Enjoy the journey.

Rob!

STI= Strayer Tripp International. Sandy Strayer and Virgil Tripp .. bro they are IPSC world class shooter in the past who started STI

To OP - STI trojan - middle price 1911 or HK45 - 1911 of polymer ... in my opinon

Read it again. Look for the more conventional meaning. It's worth it.
