Hey everybody.
I have a Mossberg 930 shotgun, and I love it. But I NEED more guns, and I want a rifle, but where do I start? I want something I will be able to hunt with, so I needs enough power to take down a deer, or bigger. But I also want to just be able to take out a target from fairly long distance.

So I'm thinking center fire, but other than that I have NOTHING!
Oh yeah, lets keep the price fairly reasonable, as in well under the $1000 mark out of the box.
And I like stuff that not everyone out there has, hence why my shotgun is a Mossberg and NOT a Remington.

Thank you

1) everyone has/had Mossberg. many people have/had multiple Mossbergs.
2) Remington is the best out there. what do you have against Remington?
3) if you really want a gun that isn't too common, i can almost guarantee that it will cost you more than a grand.

30-06 has a wide range of factory offerings. If cost is an immediate issue you could purchase a rifle with iron sights and upgrade to a scope later on.

There's tons of options but you have to make some compromises if you want a gun for hunting and long range target work. If you're looking for a gun to shoot long range target it'll mean a heavy barrel rig, which means a heavier rifle to lug around in the bush, a lighter hunting rifle won't be ideal for the range however, so both will be a compromise. You'll probably shoot a lot more at the range so I'd go with a more dedicated target rig and just deal with the weight in the bush, it's not the end of the world. For under a $1000 I'd suggest a Remington 700 SPS Tactical in .308 with a Bushnell 3200 10x40 Mildot, it'll just make your budget with rings. For "well" under $1000 you won't get much that will satisfy your needs.

I'm with you Dannymat, everyone and their dog has remingtons. I don't much understand what all the hype is about them...

If I were you, I would head over to TradeEx http://www.tradeexcanada.com/ and check out their husqvarna sporters in 30-06. Great Mauser action, not everyone and their dog has one, 30-06 is a do-all calibre, and you will still have money left over for decent optics.

That's my opinion. :runaway:

1.) Not true. I've never had a Mossberg. I have a Remington 870, and it's a good gun overall, but if it hadn't been such a good deal with a rifled slug barrel included and my then girlfriend egging me on because she wanted me to have a treat (a lovely, dear woman) I'd have held out for a Mossberg 500 which is no less a good gun and has the safety in a much better place than the 870. And my 870 has the J-lock. There is no excuse for inventing the J-lock. Mossberg never made a J-lock.

2.) Not true. Remington has come up with some very good designs that have deserved their success, but they've also had some bad ideas and at times let their build quality slip. They are not the best out there.

If you want decent accuracy right out of the box, including scope! Get a savage package in .30-06.

I recently picked up one of these and after 6 sighting rounds was putting a 1" group into a 200 yard target with factory ammo (165 grain Fusion).

Hey, its an option. I paid $399.00 at Wholesale sports for it.

Why is it that here on CGN, every $300 savage wearing a $100 scope prints 5 shot 1/2 MOA 200 yard groups shooting factory ammo.......

I know lots of people have mossbergs, and I have nothing against remington, I'm just saying that like others have said, everyone and their dog has a remington.

As for my budget, that's rifle cost only, I'm willing to blow more later on optics, bi pods, and slings.
Easy to "hide" gun accessories form the girlfriend, for as she knows it came with all those things, and it seems like i got a really good deal if i happen to slip up and mis place the receipt.

Everyone and their dog knows a good gun when they see one.
Comparing a Mossberg with a Remington... now I have heard it all.:runaway::runaway:

Oh easy now, I never said anything about mossbergs vs remingtons. In my opinion they are ALL new, cheap garbage. I'm more of a 1950s square-bridge- mauser-action-with-walnut-and-ebony kind of guy. Any action that is turned on a lathe and has plastic in it just isn't my cup of tea.

I'm not saying they aren't the cat's ass for some people, but they just aren't for me. Sorta like the "blondes vs brunettes" arguement.

1) you should have bought the Mossberg. :D actually, i'm not familiar with the J-Lock. can you explain it to me?
2) yes. Remington is the best. :) i will however, concede that some of their quality has slipped now and then. but i was more referring to the Model 700. you really can't beat the Model 700. it's stayed pretty much the same, and is tried and tested. i have yet to find a gun i like shooting better than my Remngton 700.

guns are like art. beauty is in the eye of the beholder. everyone will have a different idea of "the best gun out there." and i'm totally fine with that. it leads to spirited discussions, lengthy arguments over the campfire and drunken brawls in the basement. :D and of course, at the end of the day, everyone goes home thinking that he/she has won. i think it's one of the great things about our sport. i don't see basketball players arguing over the best kind of ball. how boring. lol.

out of curiosity, what gun do you think is the best out there?

actually, i'm not familiar with the J-Lock.

The J-lock is a silly little j shaped slot cut into the safety button. If you turn it with the factory supplied key, it locks the safety, so the gun wont fire.
I know of more than one person who accidently went out to go shooting, and didnt have there J-lock key, so they werent able to fire the gun.

Just insert the screwdriver on your gerber and give-er a twist :D

don't need that stupid safety anyways :runaway:

I recomend a savage in 25-06  :stirthepot2:

but then iyour in Ontario and they have that stupid 270 law :p
