rifle, scope, bipod, sling for under 600.

Where do I find this nifty toy? I'm not saying I'm looking but I'm open to something new when the price fits.

Nope, doesn't work that way. Have you fired many centerfire rifles? (just trying to get a handle on your experience) For a lot of low cost centerfire shooting fun there's nothing wrong with an entry level Savage or Stevens 200 in .223 Rem. If big game is for sure on the agenda, perhaps a .243 Win. may be in order. Both cartridges are low recoil/muzzleblast and are great for all day shooting fun. Do you own/shoot a .22 rimfire?

All i own/have shot are shotguns.
i want something to blast targets with at fairly long range that i can potentially use for hunting too.
Time to visit your local shooting range and let the centerfire shooters know you're interested in trying out some rifles. At our range, you'd immeadiately be swamped with offers to try a couple shots out of most of the shooters rifles. We are kind of a friendly bunch here in the north :D

i got some buddies that bought the 700 sps and the barrel was not even floated, by the 5th shot we were 10 ft off into the field, not anywhere near the paper,, i say bunk rifle for that kinda money..a stevens 300 win mag would be the best choice, about 400 bucks, and for sure the barrel will be floated and with the barrel nut you can change the thing in the future to 7 mag if ya want more range..

add a leapers scope from marstar for $250 look here http://www.marstar.ca/ac-optics/l-30mm-scopes.shtm and ya got a wicked package.

The best thing with the 300 is the choice of bullets. when ya get into reloading in the future...tons of 30 cal to choose from

give me 600 bucks to burn and thats my choice, you would be very happy guaranteed

Get a .22 rimfire and shoot a few thousand rounds. Then start looking for a centerfire rifle. resonable .22 rifle= $300, rem sps + resonable scope $800 total $1100. The .22 will make you a better shot with the centerfire as well as being cheaper to shoot. Besides everbody needs a few .22's in their collection.

Best advice so far. And when you're ready to buy centrefire, consider .308. More than enough for hunting large game, and quite capable of long range target shooting. Plus you can still find reasonably priced Nato surplus 7.62X51 (same as .308, and please let's not start up that debate again? Please?)

:D

You will likely end up with a mix of guns anyways. Almost all of us on this site own at least a few guns. I have an older (60s) Remmie 870 Wingmaster that I picked up in very nice shape for $250. I have a nice Marlin lever 30-30 I got for the same. I have a 30-06, 308, 223, at least 3 22lr and have way too much cash tied up in good glass. I shoot all of it and hunt with all of it depending on whats on the menu. And I am looking for stuff too. Get a 22lr off of the exchange and have a look at what else is available. Used stuff costs a lot less than new and most of it will outlive you. If you dont like it then sell it for what you paid. You cant go wrong with 308 and 30-06 partly because they work so well but there are so many of them out there. Get a decent used 22 and a 308 and buy a decent used scope then learn to use them. Hunt with them when you are able to kill cleanly. Enjoy your hobby and shop the exchanges frequently. Looking costs you nothing.

Since you already know and are familiar with a shotgun, might I suggest a Remington model 7600 Pump Action in .30-06 or .35 whelan. I have one, and its as accurate as any bolt gun. The Barrel is completely free floated, and its as slick as snot if you favor rapid fire occasionally for fun. They come with 22" length barrels or 18.5" Worth looking into.
Used ones go for 300 -600 depending on model and condition. There are lots of used rifles that are great and cheap. Like said before , Tradeex at the top of the page has lots of great husky's for cheap. You just gotta look to be sure that you get the best one for the money. Some mediocre ones for sale there too.
.308 win, .30-06, .300 win mag, 7mm Rem mag, are all good calibers, but the .30 cal choices a little better WHEN you get into reloading down the road.
I'd worry more about the type of rifle that fits you well first, then caliber later.
Frontier taxidermy has a good deal on several clearance new rifles such as Howa stainless rifles in a variety of calibers, plus some weatherby vanguards, and others. Best bet is to try to visit a range and physically handle and shoot several types of guns in different calibers. Some will just feel "right" when you hold them. Others will feel awkward. Make sure the gun you choose fits you right, or you'll shoot like $hit. Lots of good glass for reasonable prices once you get the gun. You could easily get a great complete setup for well under 1000. I could see 700 for a great all round gun. I just sold a savage earlier tonight on the EE, for 600..... It was in .300 win mag Stainless model 116, came with a bushnell elite 3200 scope, a sling, flip up covers, good bases and rings, a reloading 3 die set, about 120-30 used brass, a case, in mint condition. Just telling you this to say that there are good deals to be had , and that was a complete hunting and range outfit for 600 shipped. Keep your eyes out, and check back often , people here will no doubt tell you if something is a good deal or not.

Get a 24" Benelli shotgun, drill and tap for a good low powered scope and get a rifled choke tube for slugs on deer, you'll use the other shotguns in you're collection for collecting dust. Trust me on that;)

A 22 rifle is very good advice, for needed practice, trigger control, gun handling, on the cheap. and dont forget small game hunting. A semi auto comes to mind for running rabbits.

From there you can move up to 243, 257, 270, 280(my choice), 308,(great choice too) etc...depending on what game is on the menu.

Goodluck with you're choices..

By "bullet" I think he meant caliber.

The Howa mentioned is a nice rifle and you would be the only guy at the range with one.

I have not looked to see what calibers are available, but suggest something between 260 rem and 36 Whelen. something like a 7-08, 280, 270, 308 or 30-06 would eb ahrd to beat for the applciations you mentioned.

Being a shotgun shooter you probably don't have recoil or muzzle blast issues. You should check your regulations for any calibre restrictions that may exist for any future hunting plans. Then select a cartridge that is popular and middle of the road for performance. There was a Ruger in .257 Roberts for sale on the EE. Nice calibre for deer, coyotes etc. Recoil is mild, so range shooting will be more pleasant. 6mm Remington is a nice cartridge. Maybe stay away from magnums. They are not usually considered target rifles. .243 or 6mm is the minimum for deer in my mind. I hear the 7mm-08 is a great cartridge. Mild recoil, excellent accuracy potential, and fantastic bullet selection for all uses, varmint hunting, deer, bear, moose, and maybe even match grade ammo. Good luck.

Get a Remington SPS in 7mm-08 for $540 minus the $40 rebate from Remington, put a Bushnell 3200 scope on it for under $300, Leupold rings and bases are about $80. Sling with sling swivels are like $40. Four boxes of 140 grain ammo and you have a little change left over from your purple $1000 bill.
