I had a CGNer offer to rethread the barrel for me so I'm gonna go that route. Whatever the threading's original purpose was doesn't matter anymore. It's not common or useful so I will change it to something that is, most likely 9/16x24 at this point. I really appreciate the help from everyone!

9/16" is .5625".
5/8-36 isn't a standard thread. There is such a thing though. You can buy the tap and die. European thread size, I think. Likely for a suppressor.
You can buy thread gauges, inch and metric, fairly cheap at Princess Auto. They're not expensive anywhere though. Look like feeler gauges. Or take the easy way like Cocked&Locked says. snicker.

......I think you're mistaken. How deep per side do you calculate the threads of a 40 pitch thread to be?
Even if you were to calculate them at .03" per side (which is deeper than they actually will be) you would be at .565".
9/16" is .5625" and you are gonna be turning the od to a few thou smaller than that before threading.

If they are actually that fine then you're right, it would be all good. We still don't know what the existing thread pitch truly is though.
It's pretty moot though. It's the obvious way to go in light of the fact that the 9/16-24 is the regular size for threading on a 10mm barrel. And if it turns out that the existing thread is fine enough that it matches your numbers then it's good to go anyway. I'm sorry if my last post sounded like I was fighting the idea.
Even if it does result in some slightly scratchy looking thread peaks it'll only show if cleaning with a rag when it snags. Or some detail polishing of any scratch through can be done. Or if the peaks can be trimmed to remove any scratching from the old thread and still leave a 70% thread again that would be just fine.
And once the protector or a thread on compensator is in place it's out of sight and out of mind.
