No, this has nothing to do with my attitude...

I've recently purchased a stainless synthetic, Remington Model 7 in 7mm SAUM. This will be my sheep/goat/mountain rifle. I want to lighten it up a bit. Remington's web site say's it weight's 7 pounds.

So where do I start? I imagine the stock, let's hear some suggestions and opinions, please.

After the stock let's get imaginative...

Cheers, Troutseeker

find yourself a Ti stock, crop the barrel at 22" and flute it....get Talley Lightweights and a Leupy Lightweight 2-7X scope...done.

or "as above" with a MacMillan Edge......add about $300-$350 to the above.....

Here are some ideas for you, this one comes in pretty light I guess...... :D

This rifle is ULTRALIGHT. 7wsm, Rem Titanium short action, McM Edge Tech carbon fiber mtn. stock, and Lilja light contour 20" barrel. We added a Jewel trigger, titanium firing pin with lightweight aluminum bolt shroud and skeletonized the bolt handle and trigger guard. Weighs in at 4lbs, 10oz.

Does the Edge even come in a Model 7 inlet? Can the 700 Ti stock be inletted for a Model 7?

Troutseeker, I'd weigh the gun first hand to see what the true weight is. They already have a 22" barrel, and if you want it for long shots, I wouldn't chop any more off. The biggest weight savings will be the stock, if you can get a lightweight for it, do it.

yeah you can get the Edge in Model Seven inlet, although there are probably lighter stocks, but the Edge are real stiff and feel like a million bucks ($500 cost)

My 700 short action Edge is 23 oz with a half inch Pachmayr Decelerator pad & webbing paint, unbedded. Id imagine the factory tupperware stock on a M7 SAUM to come in at around 32-36 oz

Model Seven SAUM already have 22" barrels and I would not suggest cutting it any shorter than that. The tube could use some weight taken off via fluting which should take off 4-5 oz, bolt fluting could take off another 1-2 oz? You would save more weight converting it to ADL blind magazine if you want but I prefer the hinged floorplates and will live with the slight increase in weight happily.

Talley lightweight mounts are the lightest (and as strong as anything) and you can shed ounces in optics and still get good performance, if you go with a trim scope. I like my VXII Leupold Ultralight in 3-9x33mm @ 9 oz.

A Gre-Tan bolt shroud/firing pin will drop 2 oz over the weight of the factory shroud/pin and decrease lock-time. About $75

I think its possible to get it down to about 6.5 lbs scoped, maybe 6 3/4 tops :D

The barrell and action won't be modded, I am getting a Gretan shroud, Talley rings and a Leupold lightweigth 3X9 scope for it.

6.5 pounds scoped is my goal, the stock is the answer. I do like the look of the skeletonized bolt handle and trigger guard, although I'm sure the weight shaving there is pretty small...

6.5 scoped should still be realistic in the Model Seven, if it is indeed currently 7 lbs unscoped now. McMillan, Bansner, Brown Precision, WildCat - all make lightweight stocks

6.5 pounds scoped is pretty wishful thinking without more mods than you list. Also, Leupold doesn't make a "lightweight" 3-9 scope.

If you want a real lightweight stock, check out the MPI lightweights. Yes they ship to Canada.;)

LIGHTWEIGHT KEVLAR–reinforced stocks 16 to 20 oz.
EXTRA LIGHTWEIGHT–13 to 16 oz
MICRO-LIGHT STOCKS-about 9 oz

I believe wolf stocks in Montana make a lightweight stock for the model 7, 12oz or 16oz, but pricey.

Where can I get a set of talley rings and bases and the Gre tan bolt shroud and firing pin.
