Help Me Make A Backpacking Rifle

Thanks for all the advice. By the sounds of it maybe I should be looking at starting with a different rifle, I mean I guess if I have to buy another gun I will . I don't think i can bring myself to chop this gun, but will definitely be looking into those wildcat stocks.

$500?
i just got a Marlin X7 30-06 for under $500 for backpacking, its replacing a Tikka T3 9.3x62 which i got for backpack hunting sambar, which replaced a Ruger 35 whelen which was too heavy.....
my general backack rifle is a kimber montana tho, the marlin will replace for a general day to day hunter

Do you walk backwards when you backpack?

Your next rifle will be a first generation Axis...

LOL, no love here for the Marlin XS series? One of my daughters has one in .243 Win and it has all the features of a much more expensive rifle and it prints tiny cloverleafs at 100 metres. Personally, I like it. :) Mind you, I'm not in NZ so I only paid $300 for it...

I know, I am the original Axis (Edge) critic here on CGN, but the Marlin XS and XL 7s are head and shoulders above those tomato stakes as 'entry' level rifles go.

Good on ya, Whelen Lad. :)
