Hey everyone!

I want to get into some competitive shooting. I don't currently own a handgun that I would want to use for it! So as such a new purchase is needed.

My short list so far is the M&P 9 Range kit or an FN FNS 9mm LongSlide.

I also see some good stuff up on the EE section so will be checking that out as well.

Anyways, I want to hear peoples thoughts on where to start.

My only criteria so far is that I would like to stay under $1000 if possible and I want to shoot 9mm.

Edit: Also looking at starting out in Production Division as thats what interests me that most starting out!

Thanks in advance! :)

IPSC isn't as easy as "just start shooting". As others have mentioned, there are major and minor categories, and a whole bunch of different classes. I really suggest you spend some time with an experienced IPSC shooter to get a grip on all the nuances.

The Shadow has ruled IPSC for quite awhile. CZ quality and a lot of weight to soak up recoil help... As others have stated, you can get sweet deals on Shadows as the Shadow 2s have hit the market and retailers are dumping the older models to satiate the wants of gear junkies everywhere.

Do you want da/sa or striker fired? If da/sa, shadow will serve you very well and is available at a good price these days. If striker fired, Glock 17 for Prod division.

Production division, 9mm like CZ shadow and shadow 2 models or Tanfogilo stock 2 and 3 models,
Standard division, .40 s&w like STI 2011 models, edge, aperio, exectuive, dvc limited, etc
Classic division, STI has models tailored just for that division like the DVC classic but any 1911 will do, keep in mind that 10 round 9 and 40 score minor and 8 round 40 and 45 can score major in this division.

A couple of guys that I shoot with have the M&Ps and they hate the factory trigger. They have swapped them out knowing full well that they will be in Standard Minor when they get into IPSC. They have also had to trim the followers in their mags to allow for easier seating when inserting a full mag. Personally I would avoid that gun like the plague for IPSC

Go into production division and get a shadow ( the original one), that way your budget is met, and you a great gun as a bonus, the market is full of legal (as per production division) upgrades you can do. This will help with modifications/upgrades you might want to do to your gun. Do not overthink it; the gun will help (a bit), but the bottom line is: gun will not get you from C shooter to a GM, practice, however, will (with almost any gun, and yes even a Glock).

I have seen great shooters do amazing things with cheap/low end/undesirable guns. if you practice, Shadow will be more than enough to get you to GM level.

Guys this is perfect info! As a beginner I know I have a lot of work to do. And I also should have provided more info on which Division I want to get into.

I would like to do Production as it has the most appeal to me starting out.

I will look into the differences between Minor and Major as I haven't even heard the terms until this thread!

But seems like there really isn't much out there for recommendations starting out other then the Shadow

I did some YouTube'ing of the M&P 9 and I see what AHiltz means about the trigger.

Guess I have more shopping to do! but keep the info coming!

Production is a good place to start.

And if you're shooting production it's minor and 9mm is the way to go.

Don't understand why you 'have more shopping to do!'. The posters where loud and clear! If your budget is < $1000, CZ Shadow is the gun that will take you farther than any of the alternatives with enough left over for a decent holster, belt and starter mag pouches.

It's super accurate and a lotta gun for the price. Don't over think this, just get the Shadow and get on with it!

As most have already suggested, the CZ Shadow dominates Production Class and can be had for under $1000. It is by far the best bang for the buck in IPSC. However, you are the one that has to make the choice. I would recommend going to a match and talking to the guys, to see what they are shooting, as the majority now are shooting Production class. Cheers and good luck!

By the "have more shopping" quote, I didn't mean to throw out everyones ideas. I could have phrased this better. I mean with the shadow I will have to shop for a holster and more mags and what not. Also as stated in this thread there are a lot of upgrades to consider that still keep it under the divisions rules!

By the way I bought a Shadow 1 and 3 spare mags!

... for less then $1000 so I call that a win

Congrats! You've made a great choice. Confident you're gonna be really happy with it.

Other guns you mentioned don't come close to the Shadow.

Now as Drimitri pointed out, practice practice practice with it!

PS. You're gonna luv IPSC!

For a holster, there are many choices, but don't forget about Solely Canadian. They are a Canadian manufacturer of high quality Kydex holsters (based out of BC). There is about a 4-6 week lead time required, but in my opinion, they are worth the wait.
