I've been trying to build my dream AR for a while now, but time and funds are what's holding me back. I picked up a stripped Eagle Arms receiver just to hold the AR status, but that doesn't mean I want to use it. I've made up my mind and narrowed it down to 2 makers. Stag and RRA. Are they the wrong makers for long range shooting? Should I lean towards LaRue or Les Baer? You can only get so much info from reading up on them- so I'm asking anyone who has experience with any of these rifles to tell me which one to get and why. I'm thinking of going with a 20" barrel (if that helps), and found a little info on LWRC's piston system that caught my attention. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

get a carbine, 16 inch barrel. most ranges in canada are not long enough to fully enjoy an AR rifle. you'll find yourself getting board of bench shooting a rifle.

a carbine is still good for a few hundred meters. plus you can enjoy some tac rifle matches, and be able to take it south to the land of full capacity mags.

get a Stag, Armalite, RRA or whatever other complete carbine you find. keep it stock till you know what exactly you need. worry about piston and free float systems later. spend you money on ammo.

Actually RRA makes some of the best varmint guns on the market. Can't go wrong with Stag either but it's RRA that has the greater choice of long range configurations..

Stag 16" inch.

Shot 8 inch grouping from 600 yards with 55 grain Winchester White Box. First time shooting it that far, so the grouping was all me and my (rather poor :D ) hold offs.

Rifle is way more accurate than I am. Put match ammo into it and you have a great intermediate range rifle.

Depends on what your definition of "long range" is.
