Help me narrow down the rifle I'm after...

I didn't like the length of my 7mm stainless rem 700 cdl sf, but I do love the idea of a stainless/lam rifle. shorten it

the model 70s where heavy and the bell and Carlson stock on my extreme weather was too bulky. lighten and/or restock it

Im going to look into some savages and see what pops up. good luck with that

Round and round we go

It's simple. Build your own rifle to your own specs. Find yourself a donor action to your liking, find a stock you like on the EE, order a barrel to your specs and have your gunsmith chamber the barrel in whatever caliber you choose. Go cheap or go full custom but that's the beauty of custom, you can build it exactly how you want. This is the route I'm going these days because most of the firearms you buy off the shelf now are junk. Tikka and Sako are still better than most though but we all know you don't like them.

Curious if you have some luck with the browning bolt knob...it is a wimpy little thing and the only thing I'm not crazy about on mine...

I have another "gifted" friend who is a savage aficianado.... :)

I think you would be suited to look to the used department - try a heym, kleingunther or dumoulin...

I talked to my local smith and he says we should be able to work something out for an aftermarket xbolt knob.

im frustrated by the lack of mag kits for model 70s and ruger m77s.

to ask, how much velocity loss is there from taking a 24'' barrel down to 22 or 20''? Ive seen ruger m77 compacts with a 20'' barrel and that intrigues me. Lighter, easy swinging but a solid thumper.

You will loose 35-50 fps per inch approximately, more off the speedy calibers, less off the slower "thumper" calibers... the M77 compacts have a 16.5" barrel as seen below.
