I have an older S&W .38 here. M&P/Mod 10. Trying to get an idea of its age. 2' bbl, nickel plate, no model number stamped on crane, no bilingual markings, S&W logo on right side plate, "Made in U.S.A." on frame single line, no address. Also has adjustable rear sight (for what that's worth :) ) Any idea of what decade it was built? Serial# 6851722###X

It seems like there are too many digits in that serial number for it to make any sense. The wartime M&P .38's were in the Serial number range 700000 to 1000000 according to my S&W catalog and the ones made post war had either a "S" or "C" prefix.

I don't see anything listed in the SCSW that had an 11 digit serial number.
