A number of you guys may be familiar with my situation.
When the missus wanted to have our 4th baby I did a bit of a deal - a new rifle and a hotter motor for my vintage VW Bus.
The motor has gone out the window, and I can live with that, but the baby is due in just over a month and I'm thinking about my options.
Initially I thought about getting a decent rifle in preferably in 280 Rem or maybe 7x64 Brenneke.
As it turns out the Remington 700 Mountain LSS are available here in that cal and it a nice looking rifle.
I also seriously considered getting a Ruger No1a in 7x57 as I have lusted over these for quite a while.
More recently I've thought about picking up one of the Baikal MP221 Artemida sxs double in 45-70.
All of these rifles are in the AUD$1500 price range.
There are some things about all of them however.
I'm not a big fan of Rems, considering them over-rated and overpriced, and the LSS only weighs about 6.5 lbs, barely more than my Tikka T3 Lite Stainless and must have a bbl like a toothpick which would get hot really quick.
The Ruger has a lot going for it but as much as 7x57 is a classic cal it doesn't have the same oomph has 280 Rem; if Ruger made a No1 in 280 my decision would be made.
The Baikal is very enticing and is the cheapest double on the market.....which is a concern in itself, though from owners and trustworthy dealers I've had good reports.
It's no Purdey or H&H and the triggers need doing and the recoil pad replacing but plenty of factory rifles need that.
But I reckon it'd lose value fast and it also has a limited pressure rating; approx 31,000psi.
Then again it might suddenly go out of production and be a real cult classic.
For those interested in what the Baikal looks like in the flesh here are a few pics taken by a guy who bought one here:

There are other options I suppose although I'm fussy.
The "same old same old chambers" bore me i.e. .223, .243, .270, .308 & .30-06.
I also have no interest in any type of magnum, short or long, or the .308 based cartridges.
Picky, right?
I already have Martini Cadets in .22 Hornet & .25-20, a SMLE 303/25, M98 8x57 and Tikka 9.3x62.
I guess what I need to decide is should I buy a big bore or a medium to big game rifle.

She totally took you too the cleaners! A baby is worth a lot more than a motor and new gun. You should have at least got a new vault full of them, unlimited ammo for life, and a piece of property for your own private range.

Since you are going metric go for a 6.5x55 Swede. :D

But from your list alone the Ruger would be a good choice.

Congrats on the new baby on the way.
Hope all goes well. :)

That's only if you put a dollar value on it... I have four kids too, and sometimes an afternoon at the range, on the lake, in the field with a new rifle is worth more than any amount of money someone could throw at you...
All worth it though.:D
Congratulations on the new addition on the family, AND the gunrack!

I picked the Ruger No.1. I passed up a chance at the International version some years ago, and have kicked myself ever since...

Four kids?
Hope you make a killing at work dude, 'cause this'll be the last gun you'll get for a very long time. :D
See, that was my feeling when I made the deal.
BTW, those of you who voted for something else please say what it is and explain why.
Calum, yours was a good suggestion but I already have two .25 cals.
Ok, so they aren't as powerful as the Swede but the 303/25 is mighty close.

I don't like the baikial doubles, I think they're a waste of my time and my money:(, it sad but if you want a quality double you have to pay $$$. If you like the ruger then go for it, try out the 7x57. If it doesn't do it for you, you can ackley it, (like pharoh suggested) or have it chambered to .280rem, or .280ai, which is my pick!:dancingbanana:

Congrats on the baby, my first one is due in september, sounds like the end of my gun buying days..... for a little while :D.

Do you reload? I would give consideration to the caliber choice vs cost savings. Life gets tight when there are more children in the house.
I do reload....actually, that affects the advice.
It was the reason I considered these 3 cals.
Decent factory ammo for all 3 of them is pretty expensive and hard to get here in Oz.
Funnily enough if I get the 45-70 while it can use a lot of powder I could use lead pills and save myself a bit.
The 7mm cals OTOH must have jacketed bullets and the cases for 280 Rem aren't any cheaper than 45-70.
For those advocating reaming I actually want a rifle that will take factory ammo if I can't get my act together in time.
The 303/25 has dampened my spirits for wildcats.
It shoots quite accurately but to be blunt it would be nice just to go out and buy brass.

BTW, I just looked at the vote results.......does everyone want me to buy a bloody 270 Win!!

Have you tried one of the Baikal doubles?
If you have I'd love to know what was really bad about them apart from the obvious i.e. not spectacular wood, a more agricultural approach to finishing.
Or do you just dislike them in principal?

Congrats to you too, mate.
I think you understand why I made the deal.
We can.
If you mean the 7x64 the brass is incredibly expensive.
I'll look into the cost of a CZ and report back but the only brass available here is Norma and it's about $175 per 100.
It's good brass but, well, it's REALLY pricey.
Brass cost is pretty much the reason why I shied away from getting a Ruger No1 in 450/400, that and the cost of the projectiles.

If you Ackley the 7x57 you can still use factory rounds, you would be fire forming some Ackley brass for it. That's one of the advantages of the Ackley designs. Not everybody wants you to buy a .270 win, just the guys that didn't read your original post, where you clearly stated that you didn't want one of the boring old stand by cartridges!:)

I haven't owned a baikial double, but I saw one at a gun show lately. In my opinion they are "cheaply" built with poor fit and finish. I would like to own a double one day, but I apprieciate quality, and I'll just have to wait until I can afford a gorgeous European double rifle. Maybe my deal with the wife will be... "If your ever carrying twins, I get a $10,000 Merkel double!" :D Wish me luck on that deal!;)

Nice bolt rifle in 7x57mm or 6.5x55mm............ ;)

I feel your pain bud!
I bought 40 new 7x64 Norma brass for about half the price. Then I found 7 boxes of loaded factory rounds (Norma) at a show and bought all of them for less than the cost of 100 brass. I'm set for awhile.
