Help me pick a calibre 243 or 6.5 Creedmoor or other

6.5 creed.. It has to be over stuffed to gain the fps and stupid hard to get consistency .. I would go for 6.5x55 or 6.5x 284

yeah man it's brutal. Here's back to back groups

Maybe I'll have to play around with seating depth

Nice deer! Better than any muley I've shot and I'm twice his age :). But why do you think a 150gr .308" SST is good deer medicine but a 140gr .264" SST from the same case size is not? That seems pretty similar to me.

I've seen deer killed with everything from 243 to 25-06 to 308 to 300 WM and they all died very similarly. Using bonded bullets from any cartridge they stayed on their feet for 5-10 seconds (yes, even with 300 WM) and using cup and core bullets they flopped over on the spot. But they all died quickly so did it really matter whether it was a 100gr Interlock or 200gr Accubond? I know some guys in BC and Texas who happily use 70-77gr 223 on deer.

I just prefer the .308 w/ its ability to load up even heavier gr. pills for elk and moose. .308 with 165 ABs is still a soft shooting gun that I feel comfortable shooting an bull elk with. Im probably the only one on here that doesn't 100% of the time make a perfect shot, the .308 give me a bit more margin of error vs a .243 or 6.5. Maybe its all in my head....but I just prefer more diameter and weight with out going too recoil heavy like 300 mags. If the 6.5 Creed or .243 work well for you....thats all that matters.

Cheers!!

I think that North America we have the Cree dance of “bigger is better”. I don’t think that holds true.
I loaded up my 7mm Rem Mag from the bottom of the load chart up and stopped when I found the accuracy that I was after. The load is slow for a 7RM, but I don’t care.
I’m still playing with my 6.5 CM loads. I have some that are really good, but I want better. Velocity is close to where I want it, so is accuracy.
Once I have the 6.5 load, it will probably become my hunting rifle, and my son will probably use the 7mm (he’ll be quite for the next season). He was using my ultralight 308 but with circumstances, he didn’t use it for his mule buck this year. It’s 6.25lbs scoped and has a decent recoil to it. And he likes shooting it but likes the 6.5 better.

For the OP’s intended purpose, I think the 6.5CM would serve you well. Very similar to the 6.5x55 which has been in use for 130 years and still going strong. And the 6.5CM won’t be going away anytime soon now that at least the US military has started to adopt it.

What is “the FPS”?

Case capacity is case capacity. It has less than some, and more than others. Is there some mythical bench mark of “the FPS” that a cartridge has to reach?

All the cartridges mentioned are adequate. I suggest choosing the one that makes you feel confident.
I used to have a 308 and a 243. Now I have a 6.5. All are adequate. I find my self longing for a 308 again. The only reason I can think of is that is makes me feel confident and adequately equipped. I dont know why. It just is.
My friend just shot his deer at 200 yards with his 6.5CM using a 143 eldx. It died right there. Maybe I will get mine next weekend.

What on earth are you talking about?

Creed haters should JUST relize what the cartridge is ( powder capacity ) and quit comparing it to larger capacity cartridges - It is what it IS and it is a Very Accurate and Well designed Cartridge ! and it does perform With SOME larger capacity cartridges when paired up in the right action and COAL ! :p Its that SIMPLE Chuck - YOU get it - Right ? ;) RJ
