Help me pick a calibre

I don't think you will get any argument from anyone here with what you said but if one wants to push the envelope as to what a cartridge/rifle combination is capable of as far as spiceing up the load a bolt action is probably the strongest action. Truth be known the Remington 700 is probably the action alot of gunsmiths choose for custom built rifles. Most lever, pump and semi auto actions are simply not as strong, it is in their design. The Browning BLR and I do believe the Winchester Model 88 are exceptions to the rule.
I'd actually say that modern falling block actions like the Ruger #1 and Browning are stronger when it comes to the crunch.
And I say modern because although the designs are over a century old they are manufactured with modern steels and manufacturing process creating very close tolerances.
Furthermore, they make a super accurate rifle.
But yes, most gunsmiths make custom bolt actions, really for 2 reasons I believe.
  1. For the most part they're repeaters which are seen as preferrable by many, at least for hunting rifles.
  2. A top class bolt action is usually cheaper than a top class falling block..........take a look at Dakota or Martini & Hagn as examples.
I personally like the idea of a single shot; the whole idea of making your shot count and learning to reload quickly.
I'd almost put the house on the probability that those who hunt with a single shot have more shot to shot accuracy, certainly more than those who hunt with a semi-auto.

I am not at all familiar with the falling block actions. I have worked the action of a Ruger #1 but that is a far as I ever got.

Forget everything youve heard and swing your 308 unto your shoulder and go hunting! It is an excellent all around caliber. It essentially is an odd six with a slightly smaller/shorter casing. Unless you have excessive cash to throw around I would just keep your 308. Spend your $ on premium bullits and days at the range. It's 90% the shot and 10% the bullit! You have a great all around caliber! huntthegame.

The Remington is used often because it is a cheaper action than many of thee custom bolt actions, withh lots of accesory parts.
When I mentioned accurcay and semis/pumps, I was talking about hunting accuracy, not target accuracy.
When talking about single shot falling block rifles, mine are as accurate as bolt guns.

Bolt actions are generally easier to rebarrel for a number of reasons,
the locking lug system of the bolt being one.
However, these differences are not the main reason people choose a particular type or make of action.
It is PREFERANCE!!:D
For instance, I don't think you willl find any quality of accuracy difference in a Nesika, RPA, Hart, or other custom action , or a Ruger No.1 or Browning 1885.
It is the gunsmithing quality for the most part that makes the difference.
Same as the .260 Rem., 6.5X55, 7/08, 308, 270win, 280Rem., 7X57,30/06, 300 mag, and any of those cartridges close to any of them.

A moose at 200 yards is not going to know the difference in a well placed shot, and willl not know the difference in a lousy shot!
Both conclusions would be the same if the rounds were zeroed at 200 yards with any of those rounds fired in rifles with any of those actions, a dead animal or a wounded one, depending on the shot.

I got it narrowed down now, 270 wsm, 300 wsm or 7mm mag. Just have to make up my mind now. Thanks for the help guys.

If you are sure those are the 3 options then I say go with the 7mm Rem Mag cuz you will always be able to find ammo, any damn where you go.

Sorry I cannot remember the original post but I would suggest a .30-06 over any of those.

As was pointed out in the WSM vs RSAUM thread apparently the WSM is not a done deal. It could be dropped due to patent wrangling. Also winchester has recently ceased production of the legendary Models 1894, M70 and 1300 shotties.

Did you say you reload?

If you reload then just stock up on components and ignore all that... :)

levi said it,7 rem mag,ive shot quite a few calibres and the 7 is hard to beat, flat shooting ,kill anything you point it at and doesnt smack you too hard
