Help me pick a goose gun!!!

I remember asking him one day "" why?"
He said he wanted to see how long it would go before it jammed.
My reply was " Rob chances are that gun won't jam om the range, it's going to lock up on you in the middle of a crazy goose shoot and you are going to be screwed then!":p
Cat

Was that 2000 target loads? Or hunting g loads too?

Dont let the budget dictate the purchase. A $2000 gun that doesnt fit you is worth less then a $1000 gun that fits properly. Sure the added budget opens doors to new possibilities, but there is still a good chance that the best option wont reach the new budget ceiling. Lots of great options in the used market well within the original amount....of course when you figure out what gun fits you best.

A big +1 to this!

My experience was to try every semi on the market (have owned versamax, A300, A400, 11-87, super black eagle, super vinci, sx3, maxus) but what I've landed on as my favourite goose gun is a plain/jane pump gun mossberg 500 which I used to kill a mountain of Canada's last year. If you went that route, you could get two (one for you, one for your son/wife), and still have $1000 to spend on shells/clays to get all practiced up for when the geese fly. I love handing out my loaner to folks that want to come try an afternoon in the goose blind...I can't tell you how many new places I have to hunt that have come from "the loaner gun!".

Good luck,

Brobee

Certainly not a bad route to go for sure brobee. $$$ spent breaking clays is money well spent. If I didn't have a shoulder issue i never would've strayed away from my pump for waterfowling. I love torturing that thing, putting it through the full "waterfowling" experience :)

Somehow I seem to always be goose hunting when it's -25C and I'm dressed up like the michelin man - combine this with the fact that I kill just as many (maybe more) geese with measly little 3 inch shells by comparison to the 3.5 inch boomers and the excitement of all those cupped wings and dangling legs - while I am pretty recoil sensitive I honestly don't feel a thing when basting at geese.

Ha ha I hear you! If the sight of a flock rocking into the decoys with legs dangling don't make you lose your mind, well you may as well sleep in and hangout on the couch watching TV cause waterfowling ain't for you.

I've rarely noticed the recoil while shooting, but since re injuring my shoulder a box of 1&1/8 @1550 through my pump leaves me unable to lift my arm above my chest and there's a full pain in the joint most of the week after.

Yup cupped wings and dangling feet gets my hears pounding! Also I absolutely agree, in the blind you don't notice the recoil. I am lucky enough that my gun club does skeet and trap every Sunday for 4.00 so I will be there every Sunday once I make my choice. Also I would rather have the option of using 3 1/2 if I forgot or run out of my 3", but 3 1/2 is not my thing haha

Pulled the trigger!!! I was planning on buying a benelli, but I decided to go with a FRANCHI INTENSITY!!! I had some car trouble and needed to pinch pennies so I bought a secondhand unfired new in box franchi intensity in max 4. I handled one in a store recently and loved it. Can't wait to shoot it, I will post pictures and a review as soon as I can

Thanks!!! Now I'm looking for a good long range goose choke. I have been looking I to the patternmaster code black goose and the patternmaster anaconda. Anybody have good or bad things to say about either? Or any suggestions about a different one to look into?

I have the pattern master code black duck for my A5 . It works well with slower loads I believe that patter master states no faster than 1500fps .

Pattern what you have first before wasting $. Most aftermarket chokes are no better than factory chokes and all their little porting and wad bump catchers are nothing more than sales gimmicks. Read Tom Rosters research .

as the spank mentioned most after market choke tubes are just sales gimmicks
pick a few different types of ammo, pattern them with your factory choke tubes , and stick to the best ammo pattern
I like to use drylok T shot and find my factory choke tubes are as good or better then any of the after market choke tubes except the wad wizard
I also have several other different choke tubes pattern master and code black are two of them that never get used
I have a wad wizard choke tube which came with my gun , its awesome using #2 or BB shot anything bigger or black cloud ammo its worse
the wad wizard with BB shot will at 30 yards decapitate a goose consistently if my aim is true
