Help me pick a moose bullet

A friend got drawn for his moose license this year and here in NB we're allowed to have a second gun along so i'll be gearing up for moose again this september and have to pick which load i am shooting out of the 300wm.

The two that i have on hand are:

Hornady Custom International with a 180gr Interlok listed at 2960fps

Federal Fusion 165gr fusion soft point listed at 3080fps

Last year i used the hornady and it resulted in a moose in the freezer but i am curious about peoples experience with the federal fusion.

If you had the choice which one would you be shooting and why?

Go with the fusion. The hornady 180 gr interloc I found very soft in testing. Any decent 165 gr out did the 180 interloc. However I'm sure the hornady would work as well

Something that won’t fall apart on you. Definitely not ELD-X. I had a horrible experience with that bullet last year. Everybody else at the camp was using Barnes with good results. That’s what I’m taking this year

Whats wrong with staying with the 180 Interlock? We’’ve shot a lot of moose with 300s and that exact bullet. Handloads mind you, but same bullet. In the 30-06 I’m somewhere around a trainload of kills with that bullet, started at 2800 and a bit. Trains come in different lengths though. Stick with the flat-base and your’re golden. They do almost all the time what we hope the Partition does all the time.


On the other hand it probably won’t make any difference if you used the 165 fusion. Moose aren’t hard to kill.

I grew up in Yukon hunting moose with a 300 wm and would not use anything less than 180gr. I like the Nosler trophy grade but if was between those two for me, it would be the hornady all day.

Exactly, why mess with given success ...
I get wanting to gather intell from other successful hunts, but I certainly would not want to risk such a highly desirable hunt on a whim or trust someone else's pet load.
Not saying it is a bad idea....well maybe I am and thats your choice.
I sold my buddy a Remington 700 Mtn rifle in 270 30 yrs ago and he had taken 15 moose since then all with Federal 130grn soft point.

I actually did a tiny bit of guiding in Ontario for moose. If I lived there I'd either move or quit hunting moose.

Here it's an over the counter tag for bulls, 55 bucks.

Lucky guy you are, walk in and purchase a tag In Ontario, moose hunt is becoming once in a life time opportunity…folks with 15 plus points are not getting tags, heck! My neighbour with 21 points did not get a tag, neither two of his friends both with 20 points.

perhaps a move will be the order of the day…but not just yet.

As far as OP’s question…I would stick to what worked for him in the past…Hornady Custom 180 gr interlok is a serious bullet

Flip a coin, there was no wrong answer, and don’t they make a 180 fusion? It sure shot tight in one of my latest 308’s...sub moa and both 165 and 150 fusions closer to 2 moa. Try all the fusions.

Yup, it's available, I have a couple of boxes in my little 300WM stash.
It's an expensive caliber to stock up on.

I have killed moose one shot with a 130gr .277 cal. accubond go with the 180gr hornady no problem they are a good bullet and are underestimated in there ability
