Hey guys, I'm stuck a little...and looking for some direction. Out of necessity (location/availability) I'm stuck with buying scopes online..so a "sight unseen" guessing game. Hoping to draw on the collective experience level of this forum for some advice. I'll try to offer as much as possible, tell you what I've used and like, and see where this goes.

Application~field/hunting
Rifle~bolt action in 17M2
Maximum range likely~125 yards
Desired maximum mag range~16x-18x
Reticle~bdc-type preferred, but plain crosshairs OK
Adjustment~1/4" / 1/8"
Turrets~NOT exposed

Adjustable objective req., SF preferred
Budget~flexible :)

***must have a VERY FINE RETICLE***

The only scope I have that meets this criteria perfectly is a Vortex Viper HS 4-16x44, BDC reticle, so I have a "WTB" for one in the EE. Saw a Leupold VX-II 6-18x with an LRV reticle in there, but I've never looked through one and don't know how fine that reticle is. Also, I think it has a parallax setting of 50 yards and out. Probably OK, but more flexibility would be ideal. I have a Mueller APT that has nice glass, reticle is heavier than I like and it has exposed turrets. I also have a Vortex Crossfire II that Vortex claimed had the same BDC reticle, but it's probably 4-5x heavier than the Viper HS.

Think that's it. :) It would be awfully nice if a scope like this could be had for around $400, but I'm liking nice scopes more these days...and getting frustrated with lesser ones. Cadillac tastes...Kia budget. :)

For around $200 a Mueller 4.5-14x32 APV with AO is hard to beat in this price range. Yes it's not BDC and has standard crosshairs a little heavier than you desire & it's below the 16X-18X you want, but the APV has covered finger adjustable turrets vs the APT which has open turrets.

Just ordered a Mueller myself from whitefalls DOT ca, Phil is a great guy to deal with.

From what I've read/gleaned Muellers have a decent rep and bang for the buck it's way up there.

Will post a write-up when she arrives and gets mounted.

Thanks for the reply. Yes, got my Mueller APT from Phil and agreed, it's awfully nice for the money. And he is a good guy for sure. :) I'm OK with something a little higher-up in the $ dept. though, but have zero experience with Leupold, Burris, Sightron (sp?) and so on.

Completely off topic but I love that chimp sig line lol

If you're serious about shooting out to 125 meters and want to hit what you're aiming at, take a serious look at the Shepherd offerings.

I have one on a 22 Anschutzz and it will shoot minute of gopher out to 150 yards with confidence. It will also shoot into less than an inch, under controlled range conditions, no wind, at 100 meters consistently, with standard velocity ammo.

They are quite a bit pricier than the scope mentioned but there is very little guess work as far as ranging elevation goes with a Shepherd.

They are also tough as hell.

I lost one in a river. Found it and the rifle 3 days later. The butt of the rifle was sticking up in the air and the muzzle was caught in the sand on the bottom of the pool. It had been washed down the Prophet River, close to a mile. That was ten years ago. The scope was never sent in for a once over after its bath and it never lost zero. The only thing done, was to dry it all off, lube the bolt and check the zero at a few different ranges. It did everything it was supposed to do and still does.

The US Army and Marines were issuing the same scope on their M14s in Iraq to their designated shooters.

Look it up on their website.

sightron SII Big sky 6.5-20X50 LRMOA. This is side focus scope with target turrents. Lots of internal adjustment and the best optics in a 1" scope that I have seen.

Jerry

Hey Jerry, thanks for the suggestion...but that would look like a beast on a rimfire. :) Anybody want to sell me their Viper HS 4-16x44 BDC? :) No...really..

I picked on of these up earlier this year for my 7mm WSM A bolt for $625.00 new at WSS. I like it so far even though I havent shot it much. Just to let you know it has a 1/2" adjustment on it. Seems like a lot of scope for your needs but I could be wrong. Hope you find what your looking for.

They got a deal at Prairie gun trader for the scope you are looking for, had the chance of zeroing one this fall, great glass and price is good for this quality of scope... JP.

Does the 17M2 drop much at 125 yards?
