Just bought a new Remington 700 CDL .35 Whelen. Now I need a scope. I want to have pretty good optics on it but I can't afford the exotic stuff... $800 will be about my limit.

I will be using it for Elk/Moose/some Deer, in Alberta's Eastern slopes and mountains. I am expecting to be finding relatively heavy cover so above average light transmission is a big plus. Not looking for anything more than a 9 or 10 power tops, less is more. I'm considering looking for a 30mm tube to help with that.

Leupold of course is in the running, so is the Zeiss Conquest. Any other suggestions?

3.5-10 VX-111 or VX-3 now. A 30mm tube won't make it any brighter, a 50mm objective will at the cost of greater bulk. The Conquest is also a good choice.
Those CDLs might be the nicest looking rifle Remington ever screwed together.

I have a Leupold VXII 3-9x40 on my Whelen and I think it's about perfect. 3x for the thick stuff and 9x for the longer shot as far as the Whelen can take you.
