Help me pick a semi auto 22? rifle?

I've own all three

1) 10/22 get a wood stock not a synthethic one, I prefer the balance of wood stock but that's just me.

2) 597 I own the 597VTR great rifle very reliable and more accurate than the 10/22 but 30 rounders are a POS, 10 rounders are a hit or miss either really reliable or POS

3) POS that's all I gave to say, I've tried Thunderbolts M22 cci standard federal federal (the gold box) and never managed to shoot a full mag.

IMO get a plain rifle to start don't add all those stocks unless you plan on losing a ton of money, plus a 10/22 in standard stock will take you 10 minutes to strip completely trigger included, 20 minutes to cleand and inspect every part and another 10 minutes to put back together.

Going to vote for the 10/22. I have the basic carbine, and it's reliable as reliable can be. Tons of different aftermarket parts for it, so you can tinker to your hearts content. I have a couple of the GSG drum mags for it, couple butler creeks, a couple of the HC3R, and 3 of the Ruger factory 10 round mags. The GSG and Ruger mags are by FAR the most reliable of the bunch for me - as in zero jams, ever. The BC's and HC3R's are "mostly" reliable, but I use them the least, and supposedly both require a break in that I might not have achieved yet.

597 - No comment. Don't own, haven't shot.

Pietta - I would say steer clear. I know there are people who've had good luck with them, but of the two friends of mine who have them, both have had nothing but problems with them. Lots of jamming - FTF and stove-pipe issues. And when they do work, even a basic Ruger will beat them on accuracy.

Even with my bog-standard basic 10/22 carbine, minute of gopher is easy at 50-60 yards, practical shooting. Handy, lightweight little rifle. When I'm field shooting, I tend to use the factory 10 rounders. Just easier to carry around. The higher cap mags are for plinking.
 
Yes the 10/22 is very good I have an Ar-7 G3 by Henry Arms and a Remington 597 every time I go shooting I wish I had a takedown 10/22... My Ar-7 is very good for what it is but what it is would be a " I am hungry SHTFR " it does that well but in no way is it an everyday gun.
 
10/22 IT IS! Okay, now where are the best places in canada to shop for them. Cabelas is way overpriced basspro has then for 249 but the synthetic version only in my desired 20" barrel..

I've eyed those at IRG a few times over the past year or so... They get a batch of them and they vanish quickly. Ever so very tempting, and that's a pretty good price for them right now.

Come on, Revenue Canada... process that return... Daddy needs new boomsticks...
 
I went with a marlin 795 it's cheap and accurate and you can get higher cap mags. That being said if I wanted to tweak and customize a rifle I'd go with the 10/22 because there is a huge amount of aftermarket accessories to choose from.

Im going with that too. I hate how the 10/22 is built for customization so much I want a cheap good factory gun.
 
When I was buying a 22LR semi-auto for my plinker and my wife's main rifle, I was torn between the Ruger 10/22 and Remington 597. I was told by a very trustworthy friend of mine who knows everything about guns that the internal parts of a 10/22 are a bit better-made than a 597, which does justify its higher price. However, I just wasn't a fan of the look of the 10/22, the way it had the rounded slope into the grip...just not a fan.

I went with the 597, and got a good price on it. I haven't had a single stoppage yet with the 10-round mag than came with it, and I only have the dirt cheap crap Winchester M22 ammo. However, I also bought the long 25-rd Remington-branded clear plastic banana mag, and although the first 20 rounds shoot fine, I always get stoppages with the last few rounds. It's like the spring just taps out.

If 10 rounds is fine for you, though, I have had a positive experience with the 597 and the mag that comes with it. I don't really plan on modifying it at all, which is another reason many people go with the 10/22, and with bigger guns I am willing to spend more to get the best, but for a 22LR, the Remington has been just fine.

Good luck finding those hicap mags...my son has a 795 and has been looking for weeks, nothing available.
It is even tough finding the 10 rd oem mags.

It is a nice gun for the price though, he got it for something like $170 and it shoots just fine.
