Help me pick a shotgun for my boy!

. It's logistically easier if you're both shooting 12's as well.

Good safety point! My first shotgun was a mossberg 12 ga break action single shot. My buddy had the same EXCEPT it was a 20 ga. To make a long story short, in the adrenalin rush while hunting ducks we were grabbing ammo from our bag very recklessly, the 20-12 explosion almost became a reality.

I definately wouldn't rush into the youth model.. the kid could be 5' 6" by october. If it were me i'd buy the 870 express in 12 gauge 3 1/2" if by the fall the stock is still too long just buy a cheap youth stock and slap it on. stick with the 3 1/2" chamber though even if you never buy a box it's still nice to know you can shoot buddy's 3 1/2" shells if your ever a little low on ammo. probably safer too god knows what would happen to a 3 inch chamber if one of those 3 1/2s ever went off inside one.
