Help me pick a single shot shotgun

If you go for the one in fair condition, yes you want to make sure the action is tight with no gap between breech and receiver when it is closed. But also you want to make sure the barrels are not pitted badly on the outside or the bores pitted on the inside. Although the other is $50.00 more, that could be cheaper in the end. Will the fellow come down from $129.00?
 
I have an H&R Pardner in 12ga, mod choke. I would definitely buy another. While, like some say, the finish isn't top notch, it's a functioning gun. It locks up tight as a vault, it comes to the shoulder nicely, and it's something you won't be afraid to take afield.

The finish is a touch rough, but it does smooth out with age. Buy it, and I'll bet you won't be sorry.

A word of warning though, it kicks like a GD mule.

I have a stainless 12 Gauge NEF Survivor. It is unfireable without a recoil pad, IMHO. I wish I could have found the 20 gauge for the same price. My old Model 1900 H&R is heavier, so therefore less recoil...

It's not bad with cheap birdshot, but buckshot or slugs (I use this gun when running bear bait) are very punishing.
 
I've got the NEF Survivor in 20 guage-and even it kicks pretty good.I bought it strictly as a truck gun.I like the shell holder feature in the buttstock-the shells are ON the gun, not IN the gun which makes it legal to have in the truck
 
Maybe that's where the older Cooey has a bit of an edge. I will quite often grab my model 84 16 or 20 gauge for grouse hunting. With #6 or 7 1/2 shot loads I don't feel the kick that bad at all. And of course you aren't firing a ton of shells on an upland hunt usually nowadays. I wouldn't want to be shooting heavy loads through them though and don't intend to. I have never fired my NEF but I do hear lots of reports that they kick.
 
as a shotgun noob, I do not know the availability of 20 gauge shells. Are they harder to come by and more expensive than 12 g, or just as popular as 12?
 
I think I am going to buy an H&R Pardner in 20g in the next few weeks. I want it for hunting rabbits, grouse and squirrels for the dinner table. Am I correct when I look at the full size 20g guns that they come fixed choke in either full or modified, it looks like you have a choice. What would you choose for hunting small game like the ones listed above? Thanks

well I went with the cooey, pretty happy with it

Now I need to figure out how to disassemble it, its so long it wont fit in my safe!
