I've owned a few 870's and 590A1's.
I prefer the 590A1's in their regular stock configuration(no pistol grip) because the controls fit me better. I'm down to 2 SG's now and both are Mossys.
I have to agree with other's here...forget the reddot and get one with GR sights.
Mossberg makes a 590A1 BlackWater 20" speedfeed stock version with XS GR sights on a picatinny rail(if you really want to add a RDot) and a 18.5" with factory GRs. Add a 2 shot extension on the 18.5" and you have a sweet SG! Both are under $600.
If you're in the area Target Sports has both (and many more) that you can fondle before you buy. Just my $0.02

Plus 1 for not bothering with a red-dot.

Depends what the budget is: less than $400-500, then go the winchester defender / mossy route, very good shotguns.

a winni defender is around $350-400 depending on retailer.

I have seen base model mossy 590a1, for $409.

dont get a remington 870 tactical, its just an express with addons, IMO the quality isnt there.

If you want a 870 get a 870p then you'll need $600 to $1000 depending on model preferance.

Some other gunnutters would also recomend the norinco HP9 or dominion arms grizz. that would be better on the budget.

My plan is a stock 870 express ($350 oor so)

Comes with factory (not really good quality) synthetic stock but I don't want wood.

I can tuck the 26" barrel away and go Dlask 14". (Another $300)

Ghost ring sights eventually (guessing at $200)

Parkerize eventually. (Guessing another $200)

Plus whatever I put inside for extractors etc.

This will be a SHTF gun...I can put the long barrel on and address Geese or stay short for around the cabin and local bears.

I definitely want to stay under $500 otd! I didn't know target sports had so many in stock, I'll check them out since its only 1/2 hour from my house. Thanks for the replies, and info!!

I personally like the Mossberg 590A1 SPX 20" barrel with a Hogue shortstock and a Limbsaver recoil pad but it will put you over $500 :D.
On topic, they are all solid choices so if you buy new, inspect them carefully.

So I ended up with a nice new 870 tactical!! most people tried to steer me another way, but got a great boxing day deal I couldn't pass up!! Now too start saving for my next fire arm, I'm thinking cz 858 !!! Thanks for all the replies and help!!
