I'm looking to replace my starter IPSC gun. When i bought it i knew next to nothing about handguns, while it works fine and was a good enough starter gun, I feel my skilsl have improved enough that the gun is holding me back a bit. (it's a taurus 24/7 pro .40).

I've asked alot of guys i shoot with for reccommendations already, but i figured i'd ask you all what you think.

I'm looking for a standard major gun. I'm gonna say a .40 as that's what i'm used to and i like it. i don't like doublestack 1911 style as my wimpy little hands can't hit the mag relese even with a jumbo installed.

I've been eyeballing a CZ Tactical sport in .40, but i'd be happy to hear all of your guys suggestions.

as for price cap, well for the moment i'm flat broke so this a a future purchase so we'll say unlimted budget for now.

starter gun

you make a good choice with the cz tactical sport in .40

i had one 4 years ago , and i regret selling it

for IPSC standard it's a really good gun - the barrel is 5.3 someting inch and it give really great accuracy with the factory barrel
i have printed 1 3/4 in 10 shot group at 25 meters in a IPSC target with a hornady HAP 180 gr
( i have Frank Nardi as a witness) btw he sells that gun
good deal with the alu grip and magwell
http://www.crafm.com/index.php?option=com_paxgallery&task=view&gid=39&iid=841

the trigger is scary light(you can adjust it) but you get use to it very fast

you simply need to order a ajustable rear sight from Frank or CZ USA and it match any 2011 i know of
my 2011 has a bar-sto barrel and i never went under 2 inch group at 25 meter

i have shot around 14000 round with the CZ and as far as i remember never jamed in match but......

the biggest flaws of the gun is those FU%?ING MAGS , if you can get the real hi cap mag for it that would not be a problem
they have a real big plastic base to limit capacity and the need to be tuned
you just need to round all the edges of that pad and make sure the pad is not moving

you could consider Tanfoflio limited custom if you're using the bling-bling pro perk in COD MW2
a little more to invest but the mags are full steel tube
it's a shoter barrel but it's bull and polygonal rifling

Nick, don't worry about the grip being to wide. i can show you how to drop a mag with your left thumb or you can install a left hand mag release on most guns.

Its all about personal preference. Don't let anyone "tell you" what gun to buy. Take advise from people in the know, but in the end choose what feels best in your hands. I love single stack 1911's. STI's modular frame design will give you the slimmest possible grips for double stack. I currently shoot a para, and its a bit wide for me but ive gotten used to it. My next IPSC standard gun is going to be a single stack 1911 in .40. with the right mags you can hold 10 rounds. And in Canada, you are at no disadvantage because thats all you are allowed anyways.

If you have never held an STI id suggest you try. I was amazed the first time i held an STI edge, not much wider than my single stack 1911 with fat grips. Edges go for $2000-$3000 depending on whats been done to them, new or used...The STi trojan single stack 1911 can be had in .40 and runs $1200 or so.

thanks for letting me know about the plastic mags on the tactical sport, that's the main reason i want to replace my taurus, the mags keep breaking the basepads and taurus parts in canada are few and far between. I'm sure CZ parts would be easier though

Nick, don't worry about the grip being to wide. i can show you how to drop a mag with your left thumb or you can install a left hand mag release on most guns.

I can swap the release on my taurus so i did that for a while and tried it and really wasn't a fan of dropping it with my trigger finger, and the left thumb thing never feels very smooth for me. Maybe i'm doing it wrong feel free to show me one of these nights in taver (I wont' be there tonight though damn course is taking up my shooting time)

I like the gun i have now, but knowing what i know now it's not what i would buy again.

I'm just looking to see what others like to help me narrow down my search. I'm not made of money(i don't know why i picked IPSC lol) so my plan is to pick a gun i'll love and have for a looong time.

And I didn't realize you could still get 10 rounds of .40 in a singlestack 1911... i'll perhaps have to find one i can feel up and fondle a bit.

If you are serious about competing them you will need an STI or SV or a clone of these in 40 S&W. The plastic grip can be easily reshaped for small hands for very low cost by a competent gunsmith and those guns can be tuned to perfection quite easily as well.

Anything else is just not as good and you will end up changing to STI or SV etc later.

Cz makes some fine pistols but ST SV maybe PPS or the new Sphinx are the way to go and are competative anywhere, not just Canada.

make sure you get a chance to shoot these various guns from others at your local club and you can also get an extended mag release (rearward extension) for some of these guns.
to keep costs down, you can check on here for pre-owned .40's which ever gun you choose.
but the 1911 styles and tangfolio/CZ type are designs that allow for more modifications to make the guns more shootable for ipsc.
There also are cheaper brands of 1911's style guns out there too... search the links on here and others on web..
also, depends on how competative you want to be ? really competative (more $ for better guns sti/svi, etc..) or you just want to bring it up a notch and have some fun ? (cz/other 1911's) the cheaper 1911's will just require more work after, adding to the cost...
since on budget, your best bet will likely end up being finding a used ipsc gun from someone else who's selling an sti/tangfolio...

Here ya go...

not sure if this gun is better than a std STI Edge ? with your custom choice to have it build, but for that price you can get brand new Edge with 5-6 mags, with base pads, rear fibre fr. sight (inc. shp & tax)

and maybe half that for someone selling used std. edge.

Tanfoglio Limited Custom or LC II

If you like the CZ tactical sport you should consider the Tanfoglio Limited Custom II.

Here is a pic of my pair.. The left one is the LCII.. right is LC. They are not stock but have Henning triggers and Henning Grips. The mags on the Tanfoglio are now not laser cut so they dont crack if you get the new ones..

Can be purchased from a number of sponsors above but Freedom Ventures above is the Canadian Distributor.

CZ Tactical Sport is a great gun but if you try one, see if you can find the thin aluminum grips. The new models may come with them now.

I have small hands also and I cannot handle the TS with the stock wooden grips as they make the grip too big.

No it isn't. Get good with what you got right now. Shoot until you know what you want from getting out there and seeing and handling in your hand. get to know whats the negatives with each gun (every one has one ex. bad mags).

i don't like doublestack 1911 style as my wimpy little hands can't hit the mag relese even with a jumbo installed.

I can't hit the mag release button either. Couldn't on my CZ SP01 either with the slim grips. Rotate or hit it with left hand thumb. Keep in mind the 2011 grips are slimmer than the 1911 grips. Measure it.

There's a reason that the SxI 2011 platform is used exclusively by nearly everyone.

All the more reason to run what you brung for at least a season.

That's the plan. I just thought I could get some suggestions from you guys, that way when i'm at the range or at a match and I see one i can try to convince the owner to let me fondle it and perhaps shoot it.

my gun works, actually the last match i was in it didn't have a single hiccup, no jams no stovepipes no FTE or FTF it was 100% great. however i've tried other peoples guns are they are oh so much nicer than mine. I have hand screwdriver and they have powerdrills. I want a powerdrill of my own at some point. now that i know something about the sport i have an idea of what to look for. But i figured you guys with more expereince than me could point me in the right direction, let me know what guns to stay away from and what ones are gerneally accepted as "good".

everyone has their own opinions on that and i knwo to take any advice from CGN and the internet in general with a grain of salt.

anywho thanks for the advice so far guys... i think i'm leaning more towards and sti/svi but i don't know anyone local who sells them in order to fondle one. I do know a few guys with race guns made out of them, so perhaps i'll see if i can play a bit. as i said int eh begining i don't have any cash for a new gun right now, but i want to make a very informed decision when i do get one. when i bought my taurus i knew next to nothing about handguns (being a farmboy and a hunter i thought they were useless since you can't hunt with them) and even less about IPSC. Now that i know a good deal more about handguns and (hopefully) a good deal more about IPSC i want to pick a gun i will have and shoot for many many years to come. In less than a year i've ran over 12000 rounds through my taurus and with no parts readily available in canada i know eventually a part is going to break that i won't be able to get.

Anyways i'm rambling a wee bit so i'll shut up now. thanks guys!

If you're at the match in Brooks in 2 weeks, you can try out my Tanfoglio LCII ... shoot me a PM if interested ...

Same as rd above, but this is the gunkote finish instead of the SS finish ... shoots like a dream ... I was looking at the flat trigger from Henning, but heard it was a bit of a bugger to install so I held off ... only things I've done is put a different extractor on with a heavier spring and the Henning XLong firing pin ... amazing pistol and fits my (small) hands very well

Like others have said though, try them all and buy what feels right for you ... :)

damn i won't be at the brooks match. i'm too broke lol. I appreciate the offer. I will be at provincials though.

like i've said before i'll take all suggestions you guys have. no m&p's and no glocks though. however i'm not opposed to a "plastic" gun. I do thing a "real" steel gun would suit me better though.

Lately,..I have been fondling a fake STI Eagle bb gun...I think I am getting the 3 year itch.:nest: LOL. My Limited Custom feels like a dirty tramp lately. Not shooting it well and i am looking for excuses to get an Edge.
