Im going to sell a few of my cheapo's and buy one bolt action .22 to replace them with. My budget will be in the $300-400 tops range, tax and shipping in...
Suggestions?
I like marlin and savage but was hoping for either some first hand reviews, pics, or other outside the box suggestions.
Thanks.

My choice was between the savage mark II and the cz 452. I bought the savage because well I love savages and the money saved put alot of rounds down the pipe. Great gun no problems with any ammo I tried. Everything went bang and gophers hit the ground.

I bought 2 Savages this summer, one 93FV (heavy barrel .22WMR) and a Precision 10 in .223. (see photo in signature) I think you can see what I'd choose for the $. Right now, a .22 bolt isn't required~I have that covered with an Anschutz...that hasn't been shot since I got the 93 FV. :)

I picked up a 93r17 heavy barrel a few weeks ago and talk about a real winner. I have though about selling the .22's after shooting the 17hmr

I have the same gun. Absolutely love it... It's ugly and clumsy looking in my opinion, but dammit it can shoot.... Wouldn't trade it for a gun worth twice as much..

I did the same as you a few months back.
Unloaded a few old rimfires and called Del Selins up on his
Browning T-Bolts. Tough call between the wood and camo.
I opted for the cammo as the stock has a nice feel to it, not slickery.
Plus the added mag in the end of the butt stock sold me.
Great fun accurate rifle to shoot.
And under five brown ones.
I sure don't regret this one.
Mind you, the CZ's are a decent rifle as well.
Looky.

CZs are nice too, definitely a nicer-build quality and metal finishing than Savage Rimfires. In my personal experience shooting both, the CZ didn't shoot any better than Savage and cost a fair bit more. Don't get me wrong, you GET more for the extra $, just not a better shooter in my experience. I REALLY wish Savage would do a better job with metal finishing on their rimfires, but a small amount of TLC (wipe-down with a lighly oiled rag) after each shoot takes care of business.

My vote is still Savage, and I think the Accutrigger is a great, user-adjustable factory trigger that I like more than any CZ trigger I've tried. Most people like the Accutrigger, but there are a few who don't.

I think the savages are a no brainer... Made in Ontario also. Nevertheless I'm still going to keep my options open. Now I just have to figure out which guns to thin from the herd... Unfortunately I'm attached to a couple of them and don't think I can bring myself to sell them. Looks like I might need to start a stash. But the ranger(75) and ace1 just might have to move over. Not sure about the ace 1 either though... I bought it to give to my son next year, but I could always let him pick his own gun when the time comes... Decisions decisions...

I also recommend going with Savage.
For that price range, the quality and features are unmatched.
Sure it's not the nicest materials but it's good enough.
My favorite feature is of course the Accutrigger.
I have the Mark II BSEV and it's shoots holes through holes with my Leupold VX-I 2-7 28mm.

I won't touch the Savage rifles. Yes I hear they shoot, yes I really want to like them. But the fit/finish is just too cheap. I know it's shallow but the aesthetics and pride of ownership just isn't there. Most of us will hold onto rimfires for a lifetime. Now if it was for a kid, I thought would treat the rifle roughly then ok maybe a Savage.

I'd look in the EE or some of the sponsors for second hand gems like a Walther, Anschutz, CIL 190, or some of the other old target rifles. Short of that, I'd consider the CZ452 with a brooks trigger kit. Again Id go second hand and look for one with good wood (they are out there).

If you just want a shooter, then yes the Savage fits the bill.

Twice each week from Pet to Hamilton I would drive through Lakefield and never knew that the rifle factory was there (I just visited the McDonalds there once in a blue moon but most often the one in Peterborough). A Canadian made .22lr bolt rifle from Canada would be my choice and that would be the Lakefield, Ontario-made rifle marketed by Savage Arms.

I bought this Savage .22 last winter for 309 + tax. Came with the scope, which isn't the fanciest, but my 10 yr old boy wanted a bolt gun with glass on it. Heavy barrel (arguable whether or not it makes much difference), accutrigger which hasn't been adjusted, it is just right where they set it.

Couple hours after we picked it up, new paint job and ready to rock. Cheap, so I don't have to worry about it getting banged around when he's crawling through the jungle on whatever mission he's on , and accurate enough for even the most distant orange clay nazi-commies!

Everyone says that Savage fit and finish is sub-par. It is what it is, a solid rifle with no frills. I also have a couple cz 452's, but the Savage is a great economical rifle.

Here is another vote for Savage...I bought a 93FV WMR , changed the stock to a Boyds Tacticool added a Bushnell elite 3200 3x9x40 , Harris 9-13 SLM bipod (Swivel base with notched legs) , and added a bipod locking lever.

Very happy with it and the more I shoot it the more I like it :D

Here is a thread I started .
